Gyokeres Stuns Leeds with Brace, Silences Critics with Iconic Arsenal Debut Goals

Arsenal secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, marking their second win of the season in emphatic fashion. The match was highlighted by a brace from new signing Viktor Gyokeres, who also used the occasion to playfully hit back at critics regarding his unique celebration.
Gyokeres opened his goal-scoring account for Arsenal with his first strike, which he celebrated with his trademark mask gesture, a move quickly mimicked by the enthusiastic home crowd. However, after converting a penalty in stoppage time to seal his second goal, the Swedish striker sprinted towards a camera and mockingly flicked his hair. This gesture was a direct response to trolls who had criticised his frequent hair-flicking during his debut against Manchester United the previous week, with some fans humorously noting he 'touched his hair more than the ball'. Supporters found Gyokeres's response highly amusing, interpreting it as an 'obvious middle finger to the trolls'.
The match itself saw Arsenal control proceedings, despite Leeds registering the first attempt, which was brilliantly saved by David Raya. Manager Mikel Arteta had made two changes to the starting lineup from the previous game against Manchester United, bringing in Noni Madueke and Jurrien Timber. Fifteen-year-old Max Dowman was also named on the bench, making his mark later in the game. Arsenal's opening goal came in the 34th minute from a corner kick, with Declan Rice delivering a precise ball for Jurrien Timber to head into the bottom corner. Just before half-time, Bukayo Saka doubled the lead with a powerful shot from the edge of the box.
The second half saw Arsenal continue their dominance, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring his first goal and Jurrien Timber adding his second to make it four. In injury time, young Max Dowman, who had come on as a substitute to make his Premier League debut at just 15 years old (becoming the league's second youngest player), was brought down in the box. Gyokeres stepped up with determination, converting the penalty to complete his brace and secure Arsenal's five-goal tally. The final whistle was met with a resounding cheer from the ecstatic fans.
Prior to the match, Arsenal also unveiled their new signing, Eberechi Eze, from Crystal Palace. The star midfielder was introduced to the fans after signing his contract, drawing cheers and applause as he made his awaited appearance on the pitch, adding to the electrifying atmosphere before the Gunners' dominant performance.
Post-match, Viktor Gyokeres expressed his delight at the result and his goals, stating, “Of course, I am really happy with the result. Of course, it was very nice to score two goals as well.” He acknowledged the constant pressure but maintained confidence in his ability to seize opportunities. Gyokeres also spoke about his short pre-season, emphasizing the importance of playing 90 minutes to get into rhythm and better understand the team. He felt more comfortable with the team's playing style and believed it was visible in his performance, particularly when cutting inside. Looking ahead, he noted the challenges posed by every opponent but affirmed Arsenal's strong squad, diligent training, and hard work, concluding that the team is on the right path despite always seeking improvement.
Mikel Arteta also shared his satisfaction, highlighting the positive start to the season at home, the elevated energy, and the team's confident performance. He praised the team for creating many chances and keeping a clean sheet. Arteta specifically commended Gyokeres for his power and determination, and Jurrien Timber for his two goals after a long injury layoff. The manager also celebrated the debuts of young talents like Max Dowman, at just 15, and Mosquera, calling them truly special moments.
