Leicester are stuck in the relegation zone, Forest are in Champions League mode. Leicester were the example to follow, Forest were in the lower tiers, everything changed in just two seasons.

Nuno Esperito Santo managed to keep Forest up last season, picking up 32 points, ending 17th. This season, he shuffled his squad a bit. He brought in quality players such as Elliot Anderson and Matz Sels. Both are having a great season at Forest.

Former Leicester striker Chris Wood is also one to watch. He has taken his game to a higher shelf. Jamie Vardy did exactly the same all those years ago. He gave the team that little extra all teams need to progress.

Wood and Forest will play Newcastle today. A difficult away game, but still, they have the ability to push for points who ever they play. So why are Forest so far above Leicester? Remember, Forest last season struggling heavy to avoid relegation.

Their line-up in the 7-0 win vs. Brighton, was the following; Sels – Murillo, Milenkovic, Murato – Williams, Anderson, Danillo, Gibbs-White, Aina – Wood, Elanga.

Nuno Esperito Santo do have different options in his arsenal. He can change system. He can play with a three men back line or use four. This depends on who the oppositions are.

In this January transfer window Forest did nothing, Leicester added Woyo Coulibaly from Parma. Looking at the squads and the summer additions, Leicester used more money.

We do believe that clever management is always part of a teams progress. The ability to understand and build from where you are is crucial. Using the elements in your preferred system on a match day is always important. It is not enough to sit back and play the same system. Picking almost the same team without the ability to adjust shows that Leicester are far from an ideal place. This squad of players have managed to win football games this season. But the cleverness of coaching and management makes no excuses when you fall apart as we did see vs. Brentford, all down to certain players in The Bees line-up, not really taken out in the best way possible.

It all comes down to clever recruitment and good matchday planning. A Director of Football (DOF) should have the long-term picture in mind. They should hopefully avoid those transfer dilemmas seen in the past. This includes having to let players leave without a penny being paid.

This season’s Forest team shows how two to three transfer windows can transform a relegation battler into a Champions League contender. Leicester were exactly the same all those years ago.
