Plateau Political Group Endorses Governor Caleb Mutfwang for 2027 Re-Election

A Plateau-based political organization, Re-Elect Mutfwang Again (REMA), has officially endorsed the re-election bid of Governor Caleb Mutfwang for a second term in 2027. The endorsement comes amid shifting political dynamics within Plateau State, particularly surrounding the defection of former governorship aspirant Brig-Gen John Sura (rtd) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

REMA leaders accused Brig-Gen Sura of betraying the trust of his supporters who had stood by him during his 2022 PDP governorship campaign. They alleged that Sura abandoned both the governor and the party after benefiting from their collective efforts, describing his exit as “a disappointing political volte-face.”

Reports have since confirmed Sura’s defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move reportedly made without consulting his loyal base known as the Liberation Movement. This influential bloc, with presence in all 17 local government areas of Plateau State, had been instrumental in his previous campaign strategies and outreach.

During a well-attended meeting at the Teachers House in Mangu LGA, REMA’s leader, David Nanshak, alongside former coordinators and appointees from Sura’s camp, publicly declared their allegiance to Governor Mutfwang. They emphasized that their decision was rooted in faith in Mutfwang’s leadership and commitment to the state’s development agenda.

In a show of unity, Hon. Maurice Dadik from Qua’an-Pan LGA moved a motion for the group’s formal endorsement of Mutfwang’s 2027 re-election bid. The motion, seconded by Pwajok Sunday of Jos South LGA, received unanimous approval, symbolizing a collective repudiation of Sura’s political realignment.

Speaking on the defection, Nanshak noted that political cross-carpeting is not unusual in Nigeria’s democracy but criticized Sura’s decision as lacking a “tangible excuse.” He stated that, as a result, none of Sura’s key supporters joined him in the APC, reaffirming their loyalty to Governor Mutfwang and the PDP.
