Google's 2019 Made by Google Event Unleashes Pixel Power and More!
Google recently showcased its latest hardware innovations at the "Made by Google" event, introducing a new generation of devices designed to usher in an era of 'ambient computing.' This approach seamlessly combines advanced hardware with AI-powered software, marking a significant step forward in user interaction and device intelligence. Key unveilings included the highly anticipated Pixel 4 smartphones, the budget-friendly Pixelbook Go, redesigned Pixel Buds, and the upgraded Nest Mini smart speaker.
The headline product of the event was undoubtedly the all-new Google Pixel 4. While its physical appearance had been subject to prior leaks, the official launch confirmed its capabilities. The device comes in two variants: the standard Google Pixel 4, featuring a 5.7-inch display, and the larger Pixel 4 XL, with a 6.3-inch screen. Both models are equipped with 6GB of RAM and offer storage options up to 128GB, though they forgo microSD expansion and a traditional headphone jack. Battery capacities stand at 2,800mAh for the Pixel 4 and 3,700mAh for the Pixel 4 XL.
A core innovation within the Pixel 4 series is the integration of the Pixel Neural Core, enabling complex AI operations directly on the device, such as real-time speech transcription through the Recorder app, even without an internet connection. Furthermore, the phones feature a new motion-sensing Soli chip, which facilitates secure facial recognition for unlocking and allows for certain operations to be controlled via subtle hand gestures without physical touch. Google has traditionally focused on camera excellence with its Pixel line, and the Pixel 4 continues this trend. Both devices boast a dual-camera setup on the rear, comprising a 12MP Dual Pixel sensor and a 16MP telephoto lens capable of up to 8X zoom. An 8MP front-facing camera is also included. These cameras have been enhanced to improve brightness and sharpness, along with significant advancements in night photography and astrophotography capabilities. The Pixel 4 is priced at $799, while the Pixel 4 XL is available for $899, with shipments commencing on October 24.
For the first time, Google introduced a more accessible version of its Chrome-based laptop with the Pixelbook Go. This budget-friendly device sports a 13.3-inch, 1080p touchscreen display. The base model is powered by an Intel 8th Gen Core m3 processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It includes two USB-C ports and supports fast charging, making it a practical option for everyday use. Pricing for the Pixelbook Go starts at $649, with higher-end configurations reaching up to $1,399.
Google also expanded its ecosystem with the announcement of other notable devices. The new Pixel Buds are truly wireless earbuds designed to compete with offerings like Apple's AirPods. They promise five hours of battery life, rich sound, clear calls, and a comfortable, stable fit. These earbuds are priced at $179 but will not be available until the following year. Rounding out the announcements was the new Nest Mini, a compact smart speaker serving as a successor to the Home Mini. It offers all the familiar Google Assistant capabilities and is affordably priced at $49.
