The tech giant chose to pull its appeal against a landmark ruling by Uganda’s Personal Data Protection Office (PDPO), thereby accepting the obligations it previously contested. Under the 2025 decision, Google was found to be operating without proper registration as a "data controller" and transferring Ugandans' personal data abroad without the required local safeguards. The initial verdict mandated Google to register with the PDPO, appoint a Uganda-based Data Protection Officer, and establish a compliant framework for cross-border data transfers. Vodacom Tanzania is revolutionising its M-Pesa service with the introduction of M-Pesa Global Payment, an advanced suite of international payment features. This initiative allows its 22 million users to make payments to merchants in China, Dubai, Uganda, and any location where Visa is accepted, directly from their mobile phones. This expansion is made possible through strategic partnerships with major players such as Visa, Alipay, MTN Uganda, Network International, Magnati, and TerraPay, effectively turning M-Pesa into a versatile global payments tool. Tanzanian users can now pay Chinese merchants via Alipay, settle directly into MTN MoMo wallets in Uganda, and utilize a virtual Visa card generated within the M-Pesa app for tap-to-pay functionality at Visa-enabled terminals worldwide.
