Golf Legend's Downfall: Tiger Woods Slapped With Five-Year Driving Ban After DUI

Golf legend Tiger Woods has formally changed his plea in a Florida driving-under-the-influence (DUI) case, accepting a plea agreement with prosecutors in Martin County. This agreement was reached after his arrest following a rollover crash that occurred in March. As part of the plea deal, Woods, who is 50 years old, will face a five-year suspension of his driving license and a $1,000 (£742) fine.

Initially, Woods had entered a plea of not guilty to misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and refusing to submit to testing. While he passed a breathalyzer test administered at the scene of the crash, he declined a urinalysis screening, which would have tested for other substances.

The incident in March involved Woods' vehicle clipping a truck and subsequently overturning. Despite the severity of the crash, no one was injured, though Woods himself had to crawl out through the passenger door of his vehicle. Police body-camera footage, released in April, depicted Woods speaking calmly to the officers after the accident. He explained to them, "I looked down at my phone, and all of a sudden, boom."

During his interaction with the authorities, Woods informed officers that he had not consumed any alcohol on the day of the crash. However, he did acknowledge having taken prescription medication earlier that morning. Following the incident, police stated that they suspected his normal faculties had been impaired by an unknown substance. Authorities later reported the discovery of two white pills in his pocket, which were identified as hydrocodone, an opioid commonly prescribed for pain relief. In the wake of these events, Woods publicly announced his decision to step away from golf temporarily to seek treatment and focus on his health and wellbeing. It is noteworthy that this incident marks the second time the celebrated golf icon has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
