GM Inferno: California Design Studio Engulfed, Concept Car Lost!

A significant fire recently engulfed a section of the GM Advanced Design California Studio in Pasadena, California, a facility celebrated for its innovative vehicle development since its official launch last year. The blaze, which occurred on Wednesday, October 22, at approximately 5:30 p.m., quickly escalated into a four-alarm inferno, marking one of Pasadena’s most substantial structure fires in recent years.
Emergency services, including the Pasadena Fire Department, were dispatched to the 150,000-square-foot campus. The presence of lithium-ion batteries and concept cars added complexity to the firefighting efforts, prompting the involvement of hazardous-materials teams alongside approximately 100 firefighters who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze. The fire was brought under control by 7:22 p.m. During the intense operation, a MAYDAY call was issued by a fire captain trapped inside the burning facility; after a tense period of no communication, the captain was rescued safely and sustained no injuries. Fortunately, all GM Advanced Design Studio staff were evacuated, and no injuries among employees were reported.
Initial reports from the Pasadena Fire Department indicated that the fire originated within a small section of the expansive campus. However, water and smoke damage extended beyond the immediate area of the blaze. A GM spokesperson confirmed that a single concept vehicle was lost, but stated that no other vehicles, design concepts, or the building structure itself sustained significant damage. A MotorTrend editor visiting the site the morning after containment observed that only one interior building appeared affected by the fire.
The $71-million GM Advanced Design Studio, which replaced a smaller 50,000-square-foot facility in North Hollywood, officially opened in mid-2024. The studio has been responsible for several key projects, including the C9 Corvette Concept (2025). The campus remains temporarily closed as investigators work to determine the precise cause of the fire, with cleanup and overhaul operations expected to take several days once investigations conclude.
The deployment of hazardous-materials teams was necessitated by the dual threat posed by modern concept vehicle components. Lithium-ion batteries, commonly used in electric concept cars, present unique firefighting challenges due to their potential to release toxic fumes and undergo thermal runaway, where overheating cells can reignite even after a fire is extinguished. This risk requires specialized disposal methods, such as submerging battery packs in water or retardant solutions to fully neutralize their energy. Additionally, some prototype vehicles still utilize gasoline engines, posing further risks of flammable liquid spills and ground contamination, hence the critical need for hazmat intervention.
GM expressed gratitude for the safety of its employees and first responders, reaffirming its commitment to cooperate fully with authorities in the ongoing investigation. The company stated that it is assessing steps to restore the facility to full operation as swiftly as possible, while local officials voiced optimism for a timely resumption of activities, acknowledging the studio’s vital contribution to Pasadena’s technology and economic landscape.
