Global Tensions Ignite: Trump's Iran War Escalates with Ceasefire Talks and Deadly Strikes

The conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran has escalated into its sixth week, marked by assassinations, widespread military strikes, and significant economic and geopolitical repercussions. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the killing of its intelligence head, Majid Khademi, by an Israeli airstrike, making him the latest high-ranking official targeted, following his predecessor Mohammed Kazemi, and others like Asghar Bakri, commander of Unit 840 in the Quds Force. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed Khademi's death 'severed a central arm' of the Iranian regime, while also confirming the elimination of Asghar Bakri, stating that those who direct terror against Israel will face consequences. The conflict also saw the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was replaced by his son, Mojtaba.
US and Israeli forces have carried out extensive strikes. In Tehran, Israeli Air Force bombed three airports used by the elite Quds Force, targeting runways, control towers, and a drone manufacturing factory. Strikes also hit Sharif University of Technology grounds and residential areas in Eslamshahr and Qom, causing multiple fatalities. In Lebanon, Israel struck Beirut's southern suburbs, a Hezbollah stronghold, and an apartment building east of Beirut, killing three civilians. Separately, petrochemical facilities in South Pars and Mahshahr were hit, which Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz claimed were responsible for 85% of Iran's petrochemical exports.
Iran has retaliated with missile barrages across the region. In Israel, missiles struck Haifa, destroying a residential building and injuring several, and another landed mere yards from a woman in Petah Tikva who miraculously survived with serious injuries. Iranian missiles also targeted petrochemical facilities and an Israeli-linked vessel in Kuwait, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. In Abu Dhabi, a Ghanaian man was injured by shrapnel from an intercepted missile near Al Dhafra Air Base, which hosts US forces. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global waterway, has been effectively shut off by Iran since the conflict began, leading to soaring oil and gas prices.
The US President Donald Trump has issued aggressive threats, vowing to bomb Iran's power plants and bridges, labeling Tuesday as 'Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day'. He demanded Iran 'Open the F*****' Strait' by Tuesday evening, threatening them with 'Hell'. In response, Iran's Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters warned of 'much more devastating and widespread' retaliations if civilian targets are attacked again. Iranian officials, including parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf and deputy foreign minister Kazem Gharibabadi, condemned Trump's threats as potential war crimes. President Masoud Pezeshkian also taunted Trump, predicting he would be 'humiliated' like Jimmy Carter in his dealings with Iran. Iranian embassies worldwide engaged in trolling Trump on social media, mocking his demands and intelligence.
Amidst the military escalation, diplomatic efforts are underway to secure a ceasefire. Pakistan put forward the 'Islamabad Accord', a proposal for an immediate ceasefire and reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, followed by a 15-20 day period to finalize a broader settlement. This proposal has been discussed by Pakistan's army chief with US and Iranian officials. However, Iran has refused to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for a temporary ceasefire, stating that Washington lacks readiness for a permanent resolution and rejecting any deadlines. Other mediation efforts involve Oman, Egypt, Turkey, and Russia. The UAE emphasized that any deal must guarantee free passage through the Strait of Hormuz and address Iran's nuclear program, missiles, and drones.
A daring US special forces operation successfully rescued two American airmen after their F-15E fighter jet was shot down over Iran. The pilot was rescued swiftly, but a colonel evaded Iranian forces for nearly two days, armed only with a handgun, navigating treacherous mountains up to 7,000 feet. The mission involved CIA deception tactics to mislead Iranian forces, a firefight with Iranian troops, and the destruction of two rescue planes to prevent their capture. Trump praised the operation as 'one of the most daring Search and Rescue Operations in US History', claiming both airmen were rescued without American casualties. Iran, however, called the rescue a 'deception and escape mission' and a 'cover to steal enriched uranium', insisting it was 'completely foiled', a claim widely viewed as propaganda.
The war has significantly impacted global economies. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has sent oil and gas prices soaring, hitting $111 a barrel at one point. In the UK, thousands of independent businesses, particularly rural SMEs reliant on heating oil, face more than doubled energy bills due to the sharp rise in kerosene costs linked to jet fuel. The Federation of Small Businesses called for competition watchdog scrutiny into the heating oil market, warning that the unstable conditions could be exploited by rogue energy brokers. The conflict is rattling energy markets and leading to forecasts of a 'rare global economic recession' if it prolongs.
Geopolitical analysis highlights several miscalculations by the US and Israel. The war, initially predicted to be a
