Global Spotlight on Africa: Victoria Falls to Host UN Tourism Summit
Zimbabwe is set to host a series of high-level United Nations tourism meetings in Victoria Falls from April 27 to May 1, 2026, an event lauded by ministers as a significant diplomatic and economic achievement for the nation. Information Minister Zhemu Soda announced Cabinet's approval of the preparations for these global gatherings, which will take place at the prestigious Elephant Hills Resort.
The comprehensive schedule includes three distinct, back-to-back events: the 23rd United Nations Tourism Committee on Tourism and Sustainability from April 27-28; a Sustainability-linked Pilot Capacity-Building Workshop held from April 28-29, designed to prepare for the International Year of Resilient and Sustainable Tourism in 2027; and the 2nd United Nations Tourism Regional Congress on Women Empowerment in Tourism in Africa, running from April 29 to May 1.
Minister Soda emphasized that hosting these meetings constitutes a 'strategic milestone' for Zimbabwe as it looks towards the International Year of Resilient and Sustainable Tourism in 2027. He further highlighted that these 'mega events' are expected to position Zimbabwe as a leading destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) tourism, attracting global tourism leaders, policymakers, development partners, and academics.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Barbara Rwodzi described the selection of Zimbabwe by UN Tourism as a profound political and diplomatic endorsement. She stated that this decision not only validates the country but also recognizes Zimbabwe as a viable and attractive destination, especially significant given that the country continues to operate under sanctions. Minister Rwodzi specifically underscored the successful bid to host the Regional Congress on Women Empowerment in Tourism in Africa, noting its importance in promoting women's participation and empowerment within the tourism sector across the African continent.
The minister also drew attention to the focus on resilience and sustainability, which are anticipated to be central themes in global tourism discussions leading up to 2027. She added that hosting the inaugural UN Tourism meeting focused on planning for the 2027 year dedicated to resilience and sustainable tourism underscores Zimbabwe's high regard within the UN tourism framework. The government believes these events will elevate Zimbabwe's standing within global tourism governance structures and align national development objectives with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the African Union's Agenda 2063. With Victoria Falls already recognized as a premier African destination, officials anticipate that these gatherings will further solidify Zimbabwe's aspirations to become a prominent hub for conferences and sustainable tourism across Africa.
