Global Health Alert: WHO Issues Dire Warning on Antibiotic Misuse
The World Health Organisation is urgently calling for global action against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which causes approximately one million deaths annually. This initiative emphasizes stronger antibiotic regulation, improved diagnosis, and a 'One Health' approach to combat the spread of drug-resistant pathogens. Personal stories and economic burdens highlight the critical need for investment in diagnostics and new treatments.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a critical call to action against antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which is responsible for approximately one million deaths annually due to drug-resistant bacterial infections. The organization advocates for stronger regulation of antibiotic use, enhanced access to accurate diagnosis, and increased investment in primary healthcare systems as pivotal strategies in this global fight. Dr. Jean-Pierre Nyemazi, acting director of the AMR Department at WHO headquarters, emphasized these points during a press conference held at the European Parliament for the exhibition, “AMR: The Human Stories Behind a Silent Pandemic.”
Nyemazi highlighted the transnational nature of drug-resistant pathogens, which traverse countries, continents, and species boundaries between animals and humans, making a unilateral approach by any single sector or nation ineffective. He stressed that AMR's impact extends beyond human health, affecting animals, plants, food systems, economies, and the environment, underscoring the necessity of a comprehensive
