Global Alert: Poland Scrambles Jets as Russia Strikes Kyiv Amid Peace Talks

Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, endured a night of intense Russian missile and drone attacks, resulting in significant damage, casualties, and a heightened international response. Several multi-storey buildings and a house were hit, leaving at least one person dead and 28 injured, as reported by Ukraine's State Emergency Service. The widespread strikes caused thousands of buildings to lose power, and many residents were left without heating as temperatures plummeted below freezing, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko. Additionally, 68 people were evacuated from a retirement home in the eastern Darnytskyi district.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, writing on Telegram, condemned the attacks, stating that Russia directed nearly 500 drones and 40 missiles towards Kyiv, specifically targeting energy and civilian infrastructure. He reiterated his belief that Russia does not wish to end the war and is actively seeking opportunities to inflict further pain on Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized that Russia's actions, characterized by the use of "Daggers [missiles] and Shaheds [drones]", speak louder than any diplomatic conversations. He urged international allies, including America and Europe, to take "really strong steps" to counter Russian aggression, highlighting their opportunity to demonstrate strength.
The overnight assaults prompted a swift reaction from neighboring Poland, which shares a 530km-long border with western Ukraine. Poland's military scrambled fighter jets and deployed ground-based air defense systems and radar reconnaissance as a "preventative" measure to secure its airspace, particularly in regions adjacent to the threatened areas. By Saturday morning, however, the Polish Armed Forces concluded that there had been no violation of the country's airspace. Meanwhile, Russia's defence ministry stated its air defences had destroyed seven Ukrainian drones during the same period.
Amidst the ongoing conflict, diplomatic efforts for a peace deal continue. President Zelensky is scheduled to meet Donald Trump in Florida on Sunday. Prior to this, Zelensky, EU leaders, and European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen were expected to hold a phone call on Saturday to discuss the path to peace. Zelensky has put forth a new 20-point draft peace plan, a revision of an earlier 28-point proposal that was widely considered too favorable to Russia. He expressed optimism about this new draft, describing it as a "foundational document on ending the war."
However, Donald Trump has cautioned Zelensky that he "doesn't have anything until I approve it," as stated in an interview with Politico. Trump indicated he expects to review the new draft on Sunday and expressed confidence that it would "go good" with both Zelensky and Vladimir Putin, with whom he anticipates speaking "soon." The draft reportedly includes critical security guarantees from the US, NATO, and European allies, promising a coordinated military response if Russia were to invade Ukraine again. A potential solution for the contentious control of Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, which has been a sticking point in previous talks, has emerged, with Zelensky suggesting a "free economic zone" could be an option. Zelensky has also hailed "new ideas" for peace following recent discussions with US envoys, indicating continued diplomatic engagement.
