Glo, OMobile, others to produce over 5 million restricted SIMs, tablets for students
Nigeria’s telecommunication giant, Globacom, is partnering with OMobile World, the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS), Industrial Awakening, First City Monument Bank (FCMB), and Maistrade to roll out over 5 million SabiHub-branded SIM cards for students.
Speaking on Friday in Abuja at the unveiling of the initiative, OMobile Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Ogunbanjo, disclosed that the SabiHub-branded SIM cards initiative is dedicated to empowering students with affordable, smart digital access across Nigeria.
Noting that the mission of OMobile has always been that of unlocking the power of technology for learning, access, and opportunity, Ogunbanjo added, “This is not just about SIM cards. It is about what they represent: inclusion, equity, and a future where no child is left behind simply because they lack access.
“In a time when learning is moving online, when information is digital, and when opportunity is increasingly linked to connectivity, our children must not remain disconnected.
“That is why this partnership is so important. With Globacom’s infrastructure and reach, and OMobile’s educational and community-driven platforms, we are bridging the gap between access and impact.
“Through the SabiHub platform, students will not only stay connected but also gain access to curated educational resources, interactive tools, and learning experiences designed for the world of today and tomorrow.
“We are also deeply intentional about our partnerships with schools, parents, government bodies, and technology providers because digital transformation is never a one-man job.
“It is a movement. And today, I invite every stakeholder present to join us in making sure that every home, every classroom, and every child has a real shot at digital inclusion.”
Also speaking, Missions Director, Industrial Awakening, David Ibrahim, disclosed plans by the group to produce hybrid tablets with restricted SIM cards for schoolchildren nationwide, beginning from Abuja, to check child pornography.
His words: “We are making hybrid tablets available to children nationwide, beginning from Abuja, because parents have cried that their children go online and they are either on pornography sites or they are doing something else that is toxic.
“We thank God for the initiative of this partnership that will make that cry to be over because we are coming up with this special SabiHub-branded SIM card that, once your child goes online, the child is constrained, restrained, restricted, and kept within the boundaries of learning, entertainment, and recreation.
“And this is one of the biggest things that is going to happen in the education space in the coming weeks, and millions of these SIM cards will move around Nigeria, and I am sure other African countries will emulate what we have started.”
On her part, President of NAPPS, FCT Chapter, Rukayat Agbola, noted that students can now make internal use of the internet with the restricted SIM cards and tablets without fear of going to toxic sites like pornography or indulging in financial fraud.
“The SabiHub digital platform will also help schools, parents, and students across Nigeria access quality education materials without any stress. The mobile tablet, which we are still expecting anytime from now, will be a boost for technology and innovation in Nigerian schools.”
