Ghana's UDS Makes History: African Champions Conquer World University Football Games!

The University for Development Studies (UDS) of Ghana has achieved a groundbreaking and historic feat, becoming champions of the 2025 World University Games football tournament. This triumph marks the first time an African institution has lifted the prestigious FISU World University Football Cup, etching UDS's name in history and bringing immense pride to Ghana and the entire African continent. The Tamale-based side secured their dramatic victory over defending champions Paulista University of Brazil with a 2-1 scoreline in a hard-fought final played on a Sunday morning before nearly 23,000 fans in China.

The final match presented an immediate challenge for UDS, as Gabriel Viera of Paulista University capitalized on a defensive lapse within the opening 30 seconds, cleverly lobbing goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo to give the Brazilian side an early lead. Despite the quick setback, Ibrahim Tanko’s UDS team quickly took control, dominating possession and creating several offensive opportunities, though initial finishing proved elusive. The Ghanaians relentlessly pressed forward, and their persistence was finally rewarded in the 93rd minute when captain Mohammed Sulemana struck from close range, leveling the score and sending the contest into extra time.

In the additional period, UDS continued their offensive pressure, but Paulista’s goalkeeper Silva produced a string of crucial saves, keeping his team in contention. However, the relentless pressure from UDS ultimately told in the 121st minute. From a corner kick delivered by Ezedeen Alhassan, Silva failed to deal with the difficult delivery, and the ball slipped through his grasp into the net. This dramatic late goal sparked wild celebrations from the UDS bench, led by Coach Tanko. Paulista, stunned by the turnaround, lost possession immediately after the restart, and the referee's final whistle moments later crowned UDS as the undisputed champions, dethroning Paulista University, who had won the tournament two years prior.

UDS's journey to this historic victory was equally inspiring. The Ghanaian side demonstrated exceptional resilience throughout the tournament, notably in their tense semi-final clash against Spain’s University of Granada. After a goalless draw, the team held their nerve to triumph 5-4 on penalties, with goalkeeper Emmanuel Edo hailed for his heroics during the shootout. This consistent display of determination, teamwork, and resilience ultimately lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football.

The victory holds profound significance for African university football. The Federation of African University Sports (FASU) extended its warmest congratulations, hailing UDS’s triumph as a transformative moment and a source of immense pride for the entire continent. In a statement released on September 28, FASU praised UDS and the wider Ghanaian university sports community, emphasizing that the team’s performance showcased not only athletic excellence but also strong leadership at UDS, unwavering dedication from coaches and players, and solid backing from the Ghana Universities Sports Association (GUSA). More significantly, this landmark win has earned African universities additional slots in the 2026 edition of the tournament, a development FASU described as a "true milestone" that opens greater opportunities for Africa to shine on the global stage.

The historic win was met with widespread celebration and commendation across Ghana. Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang took to social media, posting a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter) to congratulate the UDS team for their "spirited journey," noting that their determination and resilience had "lifted Ghana to the pinnacle of global university football." Similarly, former Vice President and 2024 Presidential Candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, also shared his congratulations on social media, describing the victory as "a truly historic feat that has brought pride to Ghana and Africa." He lauded the team’s dedication and resilience, highlighting their triumph as a testament to Ghanaian talent and determination, and an inspiration for other Ghanaian universities to invest in sports and nurture young talents.

The University for Development Studies’ win at the 2025 World University Football Championship transcends mere silverware; it stands as a powerful symbol of African progress on the global university football stage and a defining moment of pride for Ghanaian sports. This achievement not only positions UDS and Ghana prominently in international university sports but also serves as a beacon of inspiration for young people across the country and beyond.
