Moments after the launch of his Democracy for the Citizens Party in a colourful event held in Lavington, Nairobi, on Thursday, May 15, 2025, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took a step further to popularise the new party by unveiling its official social media handles.

He urged Kenyans to follow the pages and become part of the DCP family.

The social media handles, now active on both X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook, began attracting attention immediately.

Within hours of the launch, the Facebook page had already garnered 3,200 followers.

On X, the party’s account had reached 322 followers just 32 minutes after going live, with the numbers continuing to rise by the minute.

The pages have been filled with photos from the party’s launch event and are expected to serve as one of the party’s official communication channels.

This move comes at a time when political leaders are increasingly turning to social media to build their support base, especially among the youth.

The growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public opinion has made them a key battleground in modern-day politics.

DCP hopes to tap into this trend to push its message and agenda ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During the launch, Gachagua officially took over as the party leader. Cleophas Malala was named deputy party leader, while former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi was appointed as chair of the National Governing Council.

The party’s logo features a hand cupped around an ear, symbolic of the slogan ‘listening to the ground’, a phrase Gachagua has repeatedly used to criticise the Kenya Kwanza government for ignoring the voices of ordinary citizens.

The party’s official colour is neon green.

The party is also poised as one of the vehicles that will be used by Mount Kenya people in 2027 after their fallout from UDA. Though the launch event was successful and peaceful, chaos erupted shortly afterwards.

Gunshots were fired into the air, causing panic among supporters who had gathered to celebrate the birth of the new political movement.

Many scampered for safety as Gachagua’s security personnel moved in to restore order.

The launch comes amid rising political temperatures as the 2027 presidential race begins to take shape.

Gachagua has aligned himself with other key opposition leaders, including Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, DAPK leader Eugene Wamalwa, and NARC-Kenya leader Martha Karua.

These leaders have vowed to work together to unseat President William Ruto in the next general election.
