The Port of Nquru in the Eastern Cape is being positioned as a major logistics hub in the region.

In line with its growth strategy, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has issued a request for proposals for a terminal operator to fund, design, build and manage a new liquid bulk terminal at the port over a 25-year concession. Nquru, which serves the Coega special economic zone near Gqeberha, is the only South African commercial seaport that has an environmental authorisation for its port operation.

‘This terminal is intended to foster regional and national economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability,’ said Dineo Mazibuko, TNPA acting general manager of commercial services.

The project will see the tank farm relocated from the Port of Port Elizabeth to Nquru, reports Engineering News.

The new terminal will include liquid bulk storage tanks, road tanker loading gantries, pipelines and the necessary terminal operation infrastructure. It is envisaged future development will include a terminal for energy-related commodities such as liquefied petroleum gas.
