From underdog to champion: Jamie Vardy bids farewell to the foxes after golden career | ITV News Central

Jamie Vardy's final game at Leicester City is going to be emotional. Few players have ever had a Premier League match dedicated to them but surely no one is more deserving.Fans will wave flags to create a visual display in front of their greatest player, and former teammates like Shinji Okazaki will be among them for the send off.

Then Vardy, who has scored 199 goals for Leicester, will try and net his 200th on his 500th and last appearance for the foxes.Leicester have two matches left this season, but it's been decided that it is better he says goodbye at the King Power Stadium rather than away from home.

Ahead of that game against Ipswich Town, his current manager, Ruud Van Nistelrooy, said Vardy has been a great captain since his arrival in early December.

Van Nistelrooy said: "I think the five months or six we've been working together, through thick and thin, it's been tough, it's been rough but he's always been a great leader, always wanting to improve and keep going and to take responsibility and that with among others, so he is the captain that you want."

Only a perfectionist could have the career Vardy has had, so he will surely enjoy the fact that all these numbers will also happen on the anniversary of his signing for Leicester. It will always be the best £1m the club has ever spent. When he announced he would be leaving, I spoke to a fan in the city centre who complained about the club allowing their 'God' to leave.

In truth, they didn't have any choice, but I also think it could be good for both parties.

The 38-year-old is not retiring, and he would still be an asset to any Premier League club, but relegated Leicester have the relentless 24-team Championship season ahead and need a clean slate. The risks, sadly, with Vardy increase as every year goes by and Leicester desperately need the best replacement possible. The guarantee of being first choice will help with that search. It will also allow whoever is the manager to fully put their stamp on the squad. They have to know they are the most influential person in the building and there will always be a doubt around that given Vardy's standing.

Leicester's greatest will now get another experience to add to his unique career and I have no doubt he will be loved there too.The choice of who replaces him is an intriguing one and makes the actual football so important on Sunday.

If Leicester can finish above Ipswich, they will get around £5m more in prize money. That could be the difference between getting their 1st or 2nd preference.A summer of change is on the way. There will be a new No.9 in blue, and someone is going to have to explain a fall in energy drink sales in the Leicestershire area. But before this 13-year party ends, there is one last song. Don't expect a slow dance.
