Wisdom Kaye Wins Virgil Abloh Award, Turning Phone Videos Into Global Fashion Influence

Nigerian-American fashion creator and model Wisdom Kaye has been honoured with the Virgil Abloh Award, adding another major milestone to a career that began with styling videos filmed on a phone.

Kaye received the award at Harlem’s Fashion Row’s 19th Annual Fashion Show & Style Awards in New York on September 8, where he was recognised alongside figures including Erykah Badu, Brandon Blackwood and stylist Jahleel Weaver.

The award, presented by LVMH, recognises Kaye's influence on fashion and his role in pushing digital creativity further into the traditional fashion industry.

But Kaye's acceptance speech was less about the trophy than the unlikely beginnings of his career.

He reflected on how he started creating fashion content with an iPhone and a corner of his room, eventually reaching audiences around the world and helping establish a new visual language for fashion content.

That journey is part of what makes Kaye's rise notable.

He began posting experimental styling videos on TikTok in 2020, combining fashion, storytelling, character and visual effects in a style that quickly separated him from conventional fashion influencers. Harlem’s Fashion Row said his work helped redefine what fashion content could look like in the digital era.

His influence soon moved beyond social media.

Kaye has worked with major fashion houses including Dior, Fendi, Prada, Valentino, Ralph Lauren, Tiffany & Co., Coach and AMI Paris, while also walking the runway for Balmain.

He made his Met Gala debut in 2024 wearing a dramatic Robert Wun look, further establishing himself as a creator who could move between the internet and fashion's traditional institutions.

In 2025, he was named to TIME's inaugural TIME100 Creators list, recognising creators shaping culture and the digital economy.

His relationship with the fashion industry has continued to expand. In 2026, Kaye joined the expert panel for the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, giving him a role in identifying the next generation of fashion talent.

The Virgil Abloh Award carries particular significance because of the legacy of the late Ghanaian-American designer.

Abloh built a career by challenging the boundaries between streetwear, luxury fashion, music, art and digital culture, eventually becoming Louis Vuitton's first Black artistic director of menswear.

For Kaye, receiving an award bearing Abloh's name represents a similar shift in how fashion influence is created.

The fashion industry is no longer controlled entirely by people who enter it through traditional doors.

Creators can now build audiences, develop distinctive visual identities and attract major brands before ever receiving an invitation from the industry's established institutions.

Kaye's story is a particularly striking example because his Nigerian heritage sits alongside an American upbringing and a career built largely through digital platforms.

At Harlem's Fashion Row, the recognition came as part of a wider celebration of Black creativity in fashion.

Erykah Badu received the Fashion Icon Award, Brandon Blackwood was named Designer of the Year, Audrey Smaltz received the Ann Lowe Maverick Award, Jahleel Weaver was named Stylist of the Year and Recho Omondi received the Editor of the Year Award.

For Kaye, however, the moment represented something more personal.

A phone, a small corner of a room and an idea had become a global fashion career.

And now, years after those early videos, Wisdom Kaye has an award carrying the name of one of fashion's most influential modern visionaries.
