SE Dons Captain George Desmond Kamurasi Selected as Next King of Tooro

George Desmond Kamurasi, the 36-year-old captain and goalkeeper of south-east London non-league club SE Dons, has been selected as the proposed successor to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom.

The Royal Succession Committee reportedly chose Kamurasi on September 4, with 15 of the 18 members present voting in his favour. However, the selection still awaits a formal announcement by the head of the Babiito royal clan, with Tooro custom requiring the declaration to come after King Oyo’s burial.

King Oyo died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, after receiving medical treatment in the United States, bringing an end to a reign that began when he was just three years old in 1995. Kamurasi, known as “Big G” in the UK non-league football scene, is part of the Tooro royal family through his father, Prince George Desmond “Jimmy” Mugenyi, who was a younger brother of King Oyo’s father, King Patrick David Matthew Olimi Kaboyo III.

Beyond football, Kamurasi is also a sports coach, husband and father, having built his life in south-east London while remaining connected to his Ugandan royal heritage.

Kamurasi’s journey to the potential throne has been unconventional, with reports highlighting a troubled adolescence and a period of incarceration before football became a turning point in his life. He has since developed a career in non-league football and coaching, using sport to rebuild his life and mentor others.

If formally confirmed, his transition from commanding the goal for SE Dons to becoming the cultural figurehead of the Tooro Kingdom would mark one of the most unusual royal successions in recent times.
