From Court to Cops: NBA Legend Amar'e Stoudemire Becomes a Law Enforcement Officer
Former NBA star Amar'e Stoudemire has graduated from the Miami Dade College School of Justice Basic Law Enforcement Academy, fulfilling a childhood dream rooted in a strong family tradition of public service. He is set to begin training with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, following a path also taken by Shaquille O'Neal in his post-basketball career.
Amar'e Stoudemire, a renowned basketball star, has embarked on a new and somewhat unexpected career path, transitioning into law enforcement. On Wednesday, it was officially announced by Miami Dade College that Stoudemire had successfully completed and graduated from the MDC School of Justice Basic Law Enforcement Academy. His dedication and contributions during his training were recognized with the prestigious Harry "Coach" Everett Award.
Stoudemire, who is 43 years old and a future inductee into the 2026 Basketball Hall of Fame, revealed in an interview with Sports Illustrated that becoming a police officer was a lifelong ambition. He recounted how, during career day in elementary school, his initial aspiration was to become a police officer. This career choice holds deep family roots, as Stoudemire shared that his uncle served as a captain, his uncle's brother was a deputy, and a cousin is currently a captain. Furthermore, his sister is also enrolled in the academy, making it a significant family tradition.
Following his graduation, Stoudemire's immediate next step involves in-house training with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department. This move by a former NBA star into law enforcement is not unprecedented. Notably, another basketball icon, Shaquille O'Neal, has also pursued a career in law enforcement. O'Neal underwent training with the Los Angeles Port Police and subsequently became a reserve officer in Miami Beach. His law enforcement engagements further extended to being sworn in as a reserve officer in Doral, Florida, and as a sheriff's deputy in Jonesboro, Georgia, highlighting a unique crossover between professional sports and public service.
