Fran Drescher Talks Sun Care and Her Beauty Routine (Exclusive)

Published 7 hours ago5 minute read

Fran Drescher's found her new favorite SPF.

The Nanny star, 67, has long played it safe when it comes to sun care, so she knows what she likes — and doesn't like — when it comes to protecting her skin from harmful rays.

"Sometimes when you get these makeup products with an SPF, they don't really have the same consistency," Drescher tells PEOPLE of products she's tried in the past. "It may get shiny or it just doesn't lay on the skin in the same way. So I've always objected to that, every time I tried it. I'm not happy, so I don't buy it."

Then Laura Geller Beauty's Spackle Skin Perfecting Primer Broad Spectrum SPF 30 landed in her lap, so to speak. The newest product in the brand's Spackle collection is out May 19, and Drescher is already ready to pack it for all of her summer travels. In fact, it's so good, she calls it a "no-brainer" for the brand.

"I'm going to Sardinia next month, because I'm getting an award at the film festival, and it's in Southern Italy, so I've got to wear SPF for sure," she says. "Normally, I'd sit under an umbrella, but you've got to walk around, go to the gift shop, go to the restaurant. Then you're exposed."

The new SPF product, which is reef-friendly, water- and sweat-resistant, is designed for mature skin and seamlessly blends into all skin tones — something Drescher also likes. She's tossed out too many other sunscreen products that left a white cast or didn't feel breathable on her skin. This one is also formulated with hyaluronic acid, squalene and sunflower seed and rosehip oils to be nourishing on the skin while also protecting from UVA and UVB rays. It also has the seal of approval from the National Psoriasis Foundation and Skin Cancer Foundation.

Drescher, who has been working with Laura Geller Beauty and founder Laura Geller since 2021, says she's always happy to come back to the brand because not only is Geller "warm," but she's a supporter of Drescher's cancer organization, Cancer Schmancer. With this new launch in particular, the brand is making a donation to the organization.

The actress says that Geller's care for her own business and for the actress' cancer organization are what makes their working relationship so symbiotic. Plus, Drescher's simply been a fan for a long time — and she's got her friends and family on board too.

"I sent [the Laura Geller Beauty team a photo] FaceTiming my mom, and she was using one of [the brand's] compacts, and she's putting on makeup while I'm FaceTiming her and you can see the cover of the box because she's using the mirror on the inside," Drescher says. "So without her knowing, I just snapped a screenshot while FaceTiming her. She was talking a mile a minute, and I wanted them to see that we use the products and love them. My girlfriends do too."

Drescher continues of her working relationship: "We're really complementing each other and we're really trying to do something bigger than the sum of its parts. We're really trying to change the way women feel about aging, and that's a big story. And it doesn't just encompass the outside, it's also about what's going on on the inside. And it's a holistic approach to lifestyle. So I think that makes me feel warm and fuzzy."

Sun care isn't the only way Drescher is keeping her skin in tip-top shape, though. She's practicing plenty of self-care day in and day out and spending a lot of time on her routine.

She says she loves to use delicate essential oils on her skin in a variety of scents, but most particularly amber. She's also very gentle with her skin, because, as she advises, your skin is delicate, especially as it ages.

"I do very gentle circles when I wash my face. You don't do like this [makes aggressive washing motion], because the skin around your eyes is very thin and it stretches easily and once it's stretched, honey, watch out," she teases. "It's not pretty, it's not going back naturally. So we have to be gentle with our skin."

Drescher says she also loves to do lymphatic drainage, which she says helps her physically and emotionally.

"It brings the blood toward your heart and drains the lymphatic system, but it also helps your overall well-being," she says. "It helps release the toxins everywhere."

Another piece of Drescher's skincare self-care puzzle is facial isometrics, which are facial muscle exercises. She does them daily and enjoys them for improved blood flow.

And lastly, she simply practices "being joyful" as an overall daily mindset, which she firmly believes adds to her overall appearance.

"Then the beauty radiates from within," she says. "It's a challenge, but it's worth doing."
