Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82. He passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a hospital in the United Kingdom, where he had been receiving medical treatment.

A prominent figure in Nigeria’s history, Buhari first ruled the country as a military head of state from 1984 to 1985 after a military coup.

Decades later, he returned to power as a democratically elected president, serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. His 2015 election victory marked a historic moment as he became the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigeria.

Buhari was known for his strong anti-corruption stance and his commitment to restoring discipline in public service. During his presidency, he prioritised the fight against Boko Haram insurgency and sought to strengthen Nigeria’s economy.

However, his administration faced significant criticism for rising insecurity, economic hardship, and allegations of human rights abuses, particularly during the 2020 #EndSARS protests.

Despite controversies, Buhari maintained a reputation as a strict, principled leader who placed national interest above personal gain. Supporters admired his frugal lifestyle and insistence on accountability in government.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari spent much of his career in the military before transitioning into politics. He ran unsuccessfully for president three times before his eventual victory in 2015, symbolising his persistence and deep-rooted popularity among many Nigerians.

Buhari will be buried in his hometown of Daura in line with Islamic traditions. He is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and his children.
