McCarthy will take charge of his first Harambee Stars match on Thursday, March 20 against the Gambia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The former Blackburn Rovers striker took charge of his first training session last week and still getting to know his players.

Kenya aims to reach the World Cup for the first time in its history, and McCarthy is confident they can.

The Bafana Bafana legend shared a photo of himself in training with Harambee Stars and Elanga was one of the players that commented.

"I need to come to a game 🔥🔥," Elanga wrote

McCarthy will manage his first home match against Gabon on Sunday, March 23. Elanga has been called up to the Swedish national team for their friendly clashes against Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

Elanga has thrived since leaving Man United in 2023. He has registered five goals and nine assists in 29 league matches this season, per Transfermarkt. He won the FA Cup at Man United and has established himself as a Premier League player.

Elanga and Forest will likely secure European football next season. They are third in the Premier League with nine games remaining.

Harambee Stars are fourth in their group with five points after four matches. They are five points behind leaders Ivory Coast.

Gabon and Burundi are also ahead of Kenya/ Therefore Harambee Stars need to be almost perfect in the remaining games to have a chance.
