Football Shockwave: Andy Robertson Makes Sensational Tottenham Switch
Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced the signing of Scotland captain Andy Robertson on a free transfer, following his departure from Liverpool. The move sees manager Roberto De Zerbi look to significantly revamp a squad that narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League for the second consecutive season, only confirming its top-flight status on the final day of the 2025-26 campaign.
Robertson had been close to joining Spurs in January, but the deal fell through when Liverpool was unable to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma, leading them to pull the plug on the transfer. In recent days, Serie A club Juventus also showed late interest, though ultimately unsuccessfully, as reported by sources.
Currently in America preparing for the World Cup with Scotland, Robertson shared his enthusiasm in a short video message: "I'm in America just now preparing for the World Cup, but I just wanted to send you a quick message to say I cannot wait to play for you guys. I cannot wait to meet you guys, I cannot wait to play in the stadium for the first time in front of you and I'm already looking forward to next season."
Roberto De Zerbi expressed his admiration for the new signing: "Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team. I'm excited because he's a Scottish player first of all and I love Scottish players. [Because] I worked with [Scot] Billy Gilmour at Brighton and I love their mentality and passion in football." De Zerbi further emphasized Robertson's winning pedigree, stating, "He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch. I can't wait to start working with him and seeing the positive impact he will have on everyone around him."
During his nine years at Liverpool, Robertson made 378 appearances, contributing 69 assists. His impressive trophy haul includes two Premier League titles, one Champions League, one FA Cup, two League Cups, and one Club World Cup. The 32-year-old full-back is also set to captain Scotland in their first World Cup appearance since 1998 this summer.
Spurs' sporting director, Johan Lange, highlighted Robertson's exceptional qualities: "First and foremost, he is an outstanding left-back -- one of the best of all time in the Premier League, and someone who will improve our squad. In addition, his quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for -- and won -- major honours. We are excited for Andy's new chapter with us and look forward to having him here after the World Cup." Sources indicated that Spurs view Robertson as a crucial part of their prospective leadership group, aiming to add strong characters to the squad.
Robertson will provide competition at left-back for Destiny Udogie, who has been the first-choice in the position for the last three seasons despite facing multiple fitness issues. Robertson began his professional career with Queen's Park in Scotland before a three-year stint at Hull City led to his move to Liverpool.
