Florida AG Launches Explosive Probe into OpenAI Over ChatGPT's Alleged Role in Shooting
Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, has announced a formal investigation into OpenAI, specifically examining the alleged role of its artificial intelligence chatbot, ChatGPT, in a deadly shooting incident. The probe follows claims by attorneys representing a victim's family from an April 2025 shooting on Florida State University’s (FSU) campus, where a gunman killed two and injured five. The victim's family asserts that ChatGPT was utilized to plan the attack and has declared their intent to sue OpenAI over the incident.
Uthmeier voiced strong condemnation in a statement posted to X, asserting, “AI should advance mankind, not destroy it.” He emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “We’re demanding answers on OpenAI’s activities that have hurt kids, endangered Americans, and facilitated the recent FSU mass shooting.
