Flash Flood Warning Issued for Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia as Rains Expected to Restart
Nagpur: The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a low to moderate warning of flash floods in a few watersheds and neighbourhoods of Nagpur, Bhandara, and Gondia districts on Friday due to development of a cyclonic circulation.
Heavy rains with thunderstorms are likely to hit the region again on July 11, the advisory said. However, the intensity may not be severe as a yellow alert has been issued. Light rainfall occurred on Thursday in some places, while other areas experienced sunshine after a week. The regional meteorological centre said a system is gradually moving towards Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, which is likely to bring more rains on Friday.
"An associated cyclonic circulation lies over south Jharkhand and a monsoon trough runs from southwest Uttar Pradesh to the cyclonic circulation over south Jharkhand and neighbourhood across north Madhya Pradesh and north Chhattisgarh. The trough now runs from northeast Arabian Sea to the cyclonic circulation over south Jharkhand and neighbourhood across south Gujarat region, north Madhya Maharashtra, south Madhya Pradesh, and north Chhattisgarh," the IMD forecast said.
Officials said Central India, especially Vidarbha, falls in the south of this trough where more rains are expected. Nagpur and Bhandara recorded just 20mm of rain on Thursday, a day after recording over 200mm and 144mm of rainfall, respectively. Gondia received marginal rains. In the aftermath of the July 9 rains, the affected districts reported significant losses. Chandrapur district administration intensified relief and assessment efforts in flood-hit areas.
Tok village in Pombhurna taluka was swamped by floodwaters from Wainganga River and villagers reported significant crop loss, particularly cotton and soybean. Pregnant women from the area were shifted to Pombhurna Rural Hospital as a precautionary measure. In Amravati, farmers prepared to resume sowing operations after four days of havoc. In Yavatmal district, cotton and soybean crops came under threat in several areas.
The worst-hit region is Ghatanji taluka. Over the last 24 hours alone, the district received 42.8 mm of rainfall. In Wani taluka, continuous rain caused Wardha, Nirguda, and Vidarbha rivers to overflow, causing flooding in adjacent areas. Several roads were submerged, bringing vehicular movement to a halt. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and damage assessment of crops and infrastructure is currently underway.
