First Look: Yoshi Joins ‘Super Mario Galaxy Movie’ Adventure

Nintendo and Illumination have released a new trailer for the highly anticipated animated sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, confirming the return of Mario’s beloved dinosaur companion, Yoshi. The film is scheduled for release in April 2026.

The trailer offers a glimpse into Mario and Luigi’s adventure, voiced by Chris Pratt and Charlie Day, as they help a small desert village unclog a pipe hidden deep within an ancient temple. After navigating an eerie dungeon and clearing the obstruction, the brothers encounter their future companion, Yoshi, concealed behind jagged rubble.

Yoshi has been a staple of the Mario franchise since his debut in the 1990 NES classic, Super Mario World. In numerous platformers, Yoshi has served as a rideable mount, granting players extra mobility, a distinctive tongue attack, and an additional hit point. Players have also leveraged Yoshi for a pseudo double-jump, allowing traversal of large gaps, often requiring temporary separation from the dinosaur companion.

Yoshi’s first standalone adventure was in 1995’s Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island, which introduced multicolored Yoshis tasked with protecting baby Mario and rescuing baby Luigi from the evil wizard Kamek. The title also debuted Yoshi’s signature egg-throwing and flutter-jump abilities, features that have become iconic in the franchise.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie follows the 2023 blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, ranking as the fifth-highest-grossing animated film and 19th across all genres. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return for the sequel, adapting the popular 2007 Wii game, Super Mario Galaxy.

The original cast, including Chris Pratt (Mario), Charlie Day (Luigi), Jack Black (Bowser), Anya Taylor-Joy (Princess Peach), Seth Rogen (Donkey Kong), and Keegan-Michael Key (Toad), reprises their roles. The sequel will introduce new voices such as Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. and Brie Larson as Rosalina. Plot details remain under wraps, further building excitement for the April release.
