Firefighters' litter warning after glass bottles cause Peak District moorland blaze | ITV News Calendar

Firefighters have issued a desperate plea for people not to leave litter on moorland after it is thought discarded glass bottles were the cause of a blaze in the Peak District.

Crews from several fire stations across Derbyshire and South Yorkshire were called to Froggatt Edge on Friday afternoon, where a fire of around 2,500 square metres had taken hold.

Firefighters remained on scene into the evening to tackle the flames and got the fire under control but crews were still damping down hotspots on Saturday morning.

In a post on Facebook, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said glass bottles found at the site of the fire were the most likely cause of the blaze.

It said: "The sun has refracted through the glass and sparked the fire as the ground and vegetation is so dry.

"Please, please, please, listen to our warnings. Take all rubbish home and never light a wildfire camp fire or have a bbq."

It comes as England's driest start to Spring in 69 years has lead to fears of a summer drought.

There was half the usual rainfall recorded in April and only a quarter in March. Met Office figures show April was also the sunniest on record for the UK.

Fire services are urging people to be vigilant if they visit moorland in the dry weather, by not having barbecues and taking all litter with them.

After the blaze on Froggatt Edge on Friday, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue said: "Responding to these fires ties up our resources and can delay our response to other incidents which could be life risk."
