FG dismisses Lagdo Dam release rumour
The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that water has been released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, describing them as false and misleading.
Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, confirmed on Monday that the Cameroonian authorities have not opened the dam.
According to him, a direct conversation on July 7, 2025, with the dam manager, Mr. Ahmad Bivoung, revealed that the water level remains low at 2.06 meters, and no release has occurred.
The minister said the Nigerian government is in constant communication with Cameroonian officials and will notify the public immediately if any release is planned.
Utsev urged Nigerians to remain calm and disregard speculative reports, emphasising the importance of adhering to flood preparedness advisories issued earlier by the authorities.
He specifically advised residents in Lokoja (Kogi State), Wurobokki (Adamawa State), and Makurdi (Benue State) to remain alert to early warning signals and to consult the NIHSA Flood Dashboard for accurate and timely updates.
Highlighting ongoing government efforts to manage flooding, Utsev said the proactive operations of Nigeria’s existing dams along the Benue River are designed to prevent sudden water releases.
He also disclosed that a study and design for the Datsin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State has been completed, with a Transaction Adviser already engaged to fast-track construction under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.
The ministry, in a statement, said the Kashimbila Dam in Taraba State is currently being utilised for flood control, while the upgrade of the Wannune Dam and the study and design of the Dura Dam, both in Benue State, are progressing steadily.
