The Recording Academy announced on Friday that Fela Kuti will be honored alongside other music legends, including Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, and Paul Simon. The Special Merit Awards ceremony, where these accolades will be presented, is scheduled for January 31, 2026. This event will precede the 68th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony, which will take place on Sunday, February 1, 2026, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California.

Fela Kuti’s Lifetime Achievement Award honors his unparalleled legacy as the “architect of Afrobeat.” The Recording Academy lauded him for his pivotal role in shaping modern Nigerian Afrobeats and for inspiring countless global artists. Fela pioneered the Afrobeat genre in the 1960s by masterfully blending funk, jazz, salsa, calypso, and traditional Nigerian rhythms, creating a unique and influential sound that transcends generations.
