Approximately 180,000 cans of C2O Coconut Water with Pulp have been subject to a recall across 11 U.S. states due to significant labeling errors.
The recall, initiated by Tipp Distributors, Inc. (doing business as Novamex) on February 25, was subsequently classified as Class III, the lowest risk level, by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 6.
This classification indicates that the product's use or exposure is not likely to cause adverse health consequences.
The core issue behind the recall stems from incorrect nutrition facts and ingredient lists on the outer packaging of the product.
Specifically, the outer packaging fails to disclose the presence of 5 grams of added sugar in the coconut water.
While individual cans are correctly labeled, the discrepancy on the multi-pack outer packaging is the cause for concern.
The recalled products involve 12,000 cases, each containing 15-packs of the 17.5 oz C2O Coconut Water with Pulp. Consumers can identify the affected products by the UPC 8-50274-00792-8 and expiry dates ranging from April 3, 2027, to June 5, 2027.
These items were distributed in a wide array of states, including Colorado, California, Arizona, Washington, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Minnesota, and Michigan.
Although the FDA did not issue specific instructions for this Class III recall, the primary concern lies with consumers who diligently monitor their sugar intake.
Individuals with health conditions such as diabetes, or those otherwise tracking their dietary sugar consumption, face a particular risk due to the undisclosed added sugar.
For these consumers, the mislabeling could lead to unintended dietary choices.
In light of these findings, consumers who have purchased the recalled C2O Coconut Water are advised to either dispose of the products safely or return them to the place of purchase.
Taking these precautions is considered the safest option to avoid any potential health complications related to the undisclosed added sugar, particularly for those with specific dietary needs or health concerns.
