Fatal Ondo Air Crash: NAF Launches Probe, Calls for Urgent Action
Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the recent Nigerian Air Force (NAF) ATR-42 aircraft crash in Igbokoda, Ondo State, urging the public to avoid speculation until experts conclude their inquiry. The tragedy, which claimed the lives of NAF personnel, has led to national mourning, with calls from various bodies, including the NMA FCT Chapter, to strengthen aviation safety. This comes as another NAF helicopter made a precautionary landing in Benue State, highlighting the demanding nature of air operations.

The incident, which according to DAILY POST, occurred on October 5, 2026, has been described as a devastating loss, claiming the lives of NAF personnel. Air Marshal Aneke, who visited the crash site as recovery operations continued, strongly cautioned against public speculation regarding the cause of the tragedy, emphasizing that aviation safety experts must conclude their inquiry before any conclusions are drawn.
The investigation team will be a high-level delegation comprising both military and civilian aviation safety experts. This includes representatives from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), accident and emergency management authorities, retired senior military officers, and experienced Air Force personnel. Air Marshal Aneke stated that his visit was primarily to assess the welfare of those affected and to ensure accountability, reiterating the NAF's commitment to leaving no stone unturned in determining the precise cause of the accident. He stressed that aviation accidents demand specialized technical examination, urging patience from the general public.
Expressing profound personal sorrow, Air Marshal Aneke revealed his familiarity with all the occupants of the ill-fated aircraft, stating, “I basically knew everyone on that flight. I’ve flown on this aeroplane. My family has flown on this aeroplane. I know each of the crew personally.” He honored the deceased crew members as “highly trained, professional and intelligent officers” and affirmed that their sacrifice in service to the country must be acknowledged and honored. He assured the bereaved families of the Nigerian armed forces' full support, emphasizing, “The Nigerian Air Force is putting everything possible to ensure that the families get the necessary support they need.”
The tragic loss also prompted a national response. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ordered a probe into the crash and declared three days of national mourning in honor of the fallen NAF personnel. Furthermore, Nigeria’s foremost carrier, Aero Contractors, extended its deepest sympathies to the Nigerian Air Force and the bereaved families, conveying condolences during a solemn visit to the NAF Base in Lagos.
