Farewell to a Legend: Iranian Singer Hooshmand Aghili Dies at 88

Hooshmand Aghili, a beloved figure whose music resonated with millions and served as a cultural bridge, passed away on September 4, 2025, at the age of 88. His family expressed profound gratitude for a lifetime of music that felt like home to countless individuals across the globe.
Born in 1937 in Isfahan, Iran, a city renowned for its poets and distinctive blue tiles, Aghili's musical journey began early. As a teenager, he honed his craft under the tutelage of the esteemed Taj Esfahani. His talent quickly blossomed, leading to his early appearances on Radio Isfahan, where his voice captivated listeners and compelled them to pause and listen.
Aghili's pursuit of musical excellence continued in Tehran, where he remained an eternal student, continually refining his art. He graced national stages and, with the advent of Iranian National Television, he performed alongside the National Orchestra. This period saw him collaborating with master composers and virtuosos, a circle that further sharpened his classical phrasing and significantly broadened his musical reach.
For many growing up in Persian households worldwide, one particular song, “Farda To Miayee,” served as a powerful key, unlocking a hundred cherished memories. It became the anthem that transformed living rooms into vibrant dance floors and united cousins in impromptu choirs. Along with other favorites like “Cheraghe Khooneh,” “Darya,” and “Ghesehgoo,” his songs traversed oceans, initially pressed into vinyl and tape, and later becoming integral parts of playlists that spanned multiple generations. These melodies became instantly recognizable, especially for the Iranian diaspora, evoking a deep sense of connection to their heritage.
In 1977, Aghili embarked on a new chapter, moving to the United States. There, he built a new life while steadfastly keeping his connection to Iran close. For his family and countless members of the diaspora, his voice transcended geographical boundaries, becoming a poignant bridge between places. A few notes from his songs could instantly transport listeners back to their grandparents’ kitchens or evoke the nostalgia of a moonlit drive down Tehran’s Valiasr Avenue.
Beyond his artistry, Hooshmand Aghili was also celebrated for the man he was. He was known as the life of the party, ever ready with jokes and poems, charming every room with his easy charisma. He embodied kindness and sweetness, consistently giving of himself and often his possessions. As a devoted father, he actively participated in his children's lives, doing school drop-offs, teaching them to ride bikes, and exposing them to a myriad of wonderful experiences—embodying the daily work of unconditional love. His legacy lives on within his family, notably in his grandson, who carries
