Farah Khan recalls film industry celebrating failure of Tees Maar Khan; says Akshay Kumar starrer is "legendary film" for Gen Z
Filmmaker Farah Khan has opened up about the unspoken culture of schadenfreude in Bollywood, revealing how her 2010 directorial Tees Maar Khan was met not just with criticism, but actual celebration within the industry upon its failure. The director shared the candid remark during her latest YouTube vlog with celebrity couple Jackky Bhagnani and Rakul Preet Singh, where she and her cook Dilip were invited to their home for a meal and chat.

While reminiscing about past setbacks and industry pressures, Farah reflected on the reaction to Tees Maar Khan, a film that was panned upon release but has since developed a cult following among Gen Z viewers. “In our industry, more than being happy for your success, people are happy for other people’s failure,” Farah said. “I remember during Tees Maar Khan’s release, there was literally a celebration in the film industry. People who I had worked with were like, ‘Abhi aayi na line par.’”
She further noted that despite the initial failure, Tees Maar Khan has found new life among younger audiences. “Tees Maar Khan is a legend among Gen Z; they don’t care about my other films,” she added with optimism.
The conversation took place during a casual home tour and cooking session at Jackky and Rakul’s luxurious residence, where the couple spoke about their love story, personal setbacks, and the pressure of navigating the film industry. The topic of professional highs and lows resonated deeply, especially after Jackky recalled the box office disappointment of Bellbottom and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, produced by his family’s banner, Pooja Entertainment.
In the same vlog, Jackky praised his father, veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani, who started his journey selling sarees on the footpath before entering the film business. “Our training comes from him only… I’ve seen him go from zero to starting over, three-four times,” Jackky shared.
The candid exchange provided a rare glimpse into the vulnerabilities of public figures and the unseen resilience behind the glitz of the film world.
