Published 1 day ago3 minute read

There's something about a takeaway meal that just hits the spot, especially at the end of a busy week.

But it doesn't come cheap especially if you have several mouths to feed, with one takeaway order enough to easily set a family of five back $100.

That's why one Aussie mum came up with a clever hack to curb those takeaway craving without the hefty price tag.

Eisha-Marie Eisel and her family have what they call a "fakeaway Friday" once a fortnight.

The Aussie mum and digital creator, who recently partnered with Aldi, says that getting takeaway for herself, her husband and her three kids takes a huge chunk out of their budget.

So instead they "fake" it.

"Takeaway for our family is not exactly cheap but I like to have that experience and the tasty food that comes with takeaway," Eisel tells 9honey.

"So once a fortnight we make up a dish that we would otherwise buy at takeout."

And for Eisel and her family, it's not just your average burger and chips.

The home cook has a whole host of meals she will make for her family on "fakeaway Friday".

Some of her recipes include crispy battered fish and potato scallops, reminiscent of a classic fish co-op meal, pork belly Banh Mi to mimic the delicious Vietnamese takeout treat and even her own homemade versions of classic fast food treats.

Granted it takes a little bit more effort than driving to your local takeout restaurant or a few taps on a food delivery app.

Lazy weeknight dinners that really satisfy

But Eisel says it is worth it as it makes enjoying a Friday night 'takeaway' meal much more affordable.

"You can still enjoy the flavours and the enjoyment of the dinner without the cost," she says.

Alongside her "fakeaway Friday" meals, many of which she shares on her social media accounts, Eisel also shares plenty of family-friendly, healthy and affordable recipes.

She's got recipes for budget-friendly winter warmers, healthy lunch boxes and quick and delicious midweek dinners to help Aussies but her favourite meal to cook for the family is her lentil dahl.

"That is on our rotation almost every single week."
