Claw clips have become a ubiquitous fashion accessory, celebrated for their effectiveness in securing hair and adding a stylish flair to any outfit. Widely considered a safe and convenient method for keeping tresses tidy, these hair accessories have experienced a surge in popularity, captivating the fashion and beauty world, especially online platforms.

However, an expert trichologist, Rachel Valentine, has issued a warning regarding the potential dangers of wearing claw clips on a regular basis. Through a viral TikTok video, Valentine explained that despite their reputation as a healthier alternative to other hair-tying methods, consistent use can lead to significant hair damage. She highlighted that the frequent use of claw clips is contributing to an “epidemic of claw clip hairstyles” that causes “breakage around your crown area.”

Valentine clarified that the issue isn't inherently with the claw clip itself, but rather the repetitive tension applied to the same section of hair. “Unfortunately, any repetitive hairstyle will cause breakage,” she stated, emphasizing that it is the constant strain on specific hair areas that leads to damage, even if it’s not immediately visible. This damage can manifest weeks later, especially with tight hairstyles.

To mitigate this risk, Valentine recommends varying hairstyles daily. Her advice is simple: alternate between different hair accessories and styles, such as a claw clip one day, a silk scrunchie the next, wearing hair high or low, or simply letting it down. This rotation helps to distribute tension across different parts of the hair, preventing concentrated stress on a single area and thereby reducing the likelihood of breakage.
