Experienced former EFL keeper comes out of retirement with move to 10th tier club

The 36 year old, who has made over 500 appearances in his career, has made a U-turn on the decision to stop playing, joining the Northern Counties East League Division One outfit.

Loach, who retired from professional football in June 2024 after a 20-year career that included stints with clubs like many Football League clubs, announced his return to the game in early April 2025.

This move came after Wakefield AFC secured his services ahead of the transfer deadline on March 31, 2025, to provide cover following an injury to their regular goalkeeper, Owen Evans.

His new club currently sit 2nd in their division, with 85 points from 39 games played, 4 points behind and have a game in hand over leaders Horbury Town.

“✍️ | Loach Lands At Wakefield!

“Wakefield managed to secure another signing just before the deadline on Monday, with Scott Loach joining the ranks.

“The former professional goalkeeper will provide much needed cover, following the injury to Owen Evans – who we wish a speedy recovery to.

“Loach brings a wealth of experience to the club following a fantastic career which has seen him represent clubs such as Watford, Ipswich, Hartlepool, Barnet & Chesterfield, as well as having a number of appearances for England Under 21s.

“Loach will go straight into contention for Saturday’s game at Athersley Rec.

“Welcome to Wakefield, @S1goalkeeping!”

Manager Stephen Bodle @bodle1 tweeted: “Some big games on the horizon and seeing Owen suffering a freak injury on Saturday means we had to act.

“We lost Owen for the playoff final last season so we wanted to cover all eventualities.

“Scott is a great signing at such an important time for the club.”
