Ex-Speaker Tambuwal Vows Tinubu's 2027 Ouster, Accuses President of Destabilizing Opposition

Senator Aminu Tambuwal, a prominent member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, has launched a scathing critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of actively working to destabilise opposition parties across Nigeria. Speaking on Channels Television's 'Politics Today', Tambuwal asserted that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is orchestrating crises within parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party with the ultimate goal of establishing a one-party state, an agenda he deems dangerous for Nigeria's democracy. He cited instances such as the sealing off of an approved ADC meeting venue in Lagos as evidence of state institutions being weaponised against opposition voices.
Tambuwal declared his unwavering commitment to seeing President Tinubu unseated in the 2027 general elections. He expressed confidence that Tinubu can be defeated through democratic and lawful means, stating, "He can be defeated; I believe so. I am working along with coalition leaders to do that in the interest of the country." The former Sokoto State Governor is actively involved in efforts to build a broad national coalition, dispelling notions that it is driven solely by northern interests, pointing to figures like Peter Obi and Aregbesola as evidence of its diverse composition.
The Sokoto South Senator did not mince words when comparing President Tinubu to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Tambuwal maintained that Atiku would have made a better president, possessing a superior understanding of government dynamics and federal operations. He criticised Tinubu, suggesting his experience has been largely confined to Lagos, and highlighted the administration's perceived inefficiency, noting the delay in appointing ambassadors nearly two years into its tenure. Tambuwal lamented that Nigeria is being run poorly under Tinubu's watch, a situation he campaigned against from the outset.
Central to Tambuwal’s strategy for 2027 is the formation of a united opposition alliance. He argued that it would be significantly easier for a coalition comprising major political figures such as former President Goodluck Jonathan, Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso to defeat Tinubu. He cautioned that if these formidable figures were to run separately in the same election, it would ironically make it easier for President Tinubu to win, as the opposition vote would be fragmented. This underscores his call for unity to change the electoral dynamics.
Addressing his complex political loyalties, Tambuwal clarified his relationship with Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. While acknowledging Wike as a personal friend and asserting he never betrayed him during the 2022 PDP presidential primary, Tambuwal unequivocally stated his preference for Atiku Abubakar when it comes to the leadership of the country. He explained that his political choices are guided by principles and the nation's development, not personal friendships. He referenced his past disagreements with President Goodluck Jonathan, which led to his departure from the PDP to APC, as further proof that his stance is always about principles over personal ties.
Regarding a potential police invitation, Tambuwal stated he would appear if required, but urged the police to be "very circumspect." He also declined to discuss his recent ordeal with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the moment. Tambuwal's remarks paint a picture of a determined opposition figure focused on reshaping Nigeria's political landscape through strategic alliances and a strong critique of the incumbent administration.
