Former Chief Justice David Maraga joined the family of Brian Odhiambo in demanding justice for his disappearance.

Maraga visited the family on Friday, ahead of the court proceedings set to begin Monday at the Nakuru Law Courts.

His visit was a show of solidarity with the grieving family.

“I shared a moment with Mama Brian and her family, united in grief and unwavering in our demand for justice,” Maraga said.

"Odhiambo disappeared on January 18, 2025. His family and community now mark the date with pain and unanswered questions."

Maraga said the case is not an isolated one. He described a “disturbing pattern” of young fishermen allegedly being targeted, killed, or disappeared by state agencies.

“Listening to Brian’s wife recount how their children still ask, ‘Where did Dad go?’ was deeply heartbreaking,” he said.

“These are questions no child should have to ask and no parent should have to answer with silence.”

The former Chief Justice urged the judiciary to take a firm stand.

“The judiciary is the last line of defense against impunity,” he said. “I call upon our courts to be courageous, to be fair, and to bring accountability where it is being denied.”

“Let justice speak loudly because silence too is a form of violence.”

There has been a trend of fishermen being killed in different parts of the country.

The latest one was in Turkana County, where gunmen struck and killed four fishermen at the shores of Lake Turkana.

The incident happened at Ekoriangamuk on the shore of the lake within the Todonyang area on May 15 in the morning.

The motive of the attack was not immediately known. Police said they responded to the scene and found four bodies riddled with bullets.

The victims were shot at close range. One of the victims was aged 25, another 32, the third one 22, and a woman aged 25. Police said the bodies were moved to the mortuary pending postmortem.

In February this year, more than 20 fishermen were shot and killed in the same area.

The incident happened on February 22 evening in Lopeimukay and Lotiira area, police said. Most of the bodies were not recovered.
