Ewurabena Aubynn denies knowledge of violence during Ablekuma North rerun, pledges to tackle ... - BusinessGhana
According to her, she spent the day moving between various polling stations and therefore had no time to follow reports circulating on social media regarding alleged attacks on voters, journalists, and political actors.
“I am not aware of any violent incidents. When did that happen? I may not be aware, so you may need to bring me up to speed. I haven’t had the time to go on social media today because I have been busy running around the polling stations,” she said.
Despite video evidence circulating widely and police confirmation of isolated violence at some polling centres, Ms Aubynn insisted that such matters are best handled by the relevant security institutions.
“I believe these are security issues and can be looked into, and if there are any people to be brought to book, it will be done,” she stated.
Ms Aubynn, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, secured victory over her closest rival, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, with a margin of 209 votes. She polled 34,090 votes against Ms Afriyie’s 33,881, in a contest that was decided after a rerun in 19 polling stations.
Touching on the narrow margin of victory, Ms Aubynn said: “A win is a win, and what God wants is what He has done. This is what Ablekuma North wants, so we will work with the change that has been given to us. We will keep improving.”
She expressed gratitude to her supporters and party leaders, noting the significance of reclaiming the seat for the NDC after 28 years.
“I give glory to God Almighty for giving us the opportunity and that the people of Ablekuma North had confidence in me. I want to thank all party members and my mother, Valerie Sawyer, party leadership and executives, national and regional executives – I may not be able to mention everybody’s name,” she said.
She also praised the media for its role in amplifying concerns of voters and ensuring transparency.
“I thank the media too because I think the media did a good job. You people made everything bare. If you are not with us, maybe our voices will not be heard and the wrongs will not be exposed. So I am so excited about the work the media did.”
On her priorities as the constituency’s new representative in Parliament, she identified persistent developmental challenges such as poor drainage systems, flooding, and deteriorating road infrastructure.
“In Ablekuma North, our issues are quite simple but deep because they have existed for a long time – flooding, poor roads, gutters, etc. These basic things we have been deprived of, so we will work at it and see how best we can improve them,” she said.
With the parliamentary dispute now settled, Ewurabena Aubynn’s victory brings the NDC’s total number of seats in Parliament to 185.
