EV Charging Revolution: Porsche & Audi Adopt Tesla's Supercharger, NACS Dominance Grows

A significant transformation is underway in the automotive industry, driven by the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. Major automakers are strategizing to electrify a substantial portion of their lineups by 2030, with regions like California and New York enacting legislation to ban new internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle sales by 2035. While this shift promises environmental benefits, it also presents a critical challenge: charging infrastructure. Many manufacturers are now turning to Tesla, a former rival, for assistance, largely due to its superior Supercharger EV charging network.
Tesla's Supercharger network is widely recognized as the industry's best, boasting approximately 23,500 stations—the largest by far—which significantly reduces range anxiety for EV owners. Critically, these stations are generally more reliable than competing DC fast chargers. Furthermore, Tesla's use of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port has propelled it to become the de facto industry standard. This has led a growing number of automakers to adopt NACS, either by integrating the port directly into their vehicles or by providing adapters that enable access to Tesla’s NACS-based chargers. Porsche and Audi are the latest luxury brands to join this movement, granting their EVs access to the Tesla Supercharger network via newly supplied factory adapters.
For Audi, most E-tron owners will soon be able to utilize the Supercharger network. Specifically, new 2025 model year E-trons, including the Q6 E-tron, A6 Sportback E-tron, and E-Tron GT, which are currently arriving at dealerships, will receive an Audi factory NACS to J1772-CCS adapter as an included accessory. It is crucial to note that this adapter is exclusively for use with the DC fast charger system and is not compatible with Level 2 home or destination AC chargers using NACS plugs, which require a separate NACS AC adapter or the car’s existing J1772 AC plug. Audi plans to notify current E-Tron owners about obtaining these adapters in the near future, though Q4 E-tron owners may not have access immediately. For those with access, Tesla stations will appear as Points of Interest (POI) in the MyAudi app and Audi MMI navigation. To initiate and pay for charging at a Tesla Supercharger, users will also need the Tesla App, which can also be used to locate stations.
Porsche EV owners will follow a similar process to gain Tesla Supercharger access. They will require a Porsche factory-supplied NACS to J1772-CCS adapter, also designed solely for DC fast charging networks. Initially, owners will use the Tesla App for charging and payment, with a transition to the My Porsche app anticipated in the coming months. The adapter will be provided free of charge to buyers of 2026 model year Taycan and Macan EVs. Owners of prior model year Taycans and all Macans will also receive a complimentary adapter but must await notification via their My Porsche app. However, owners of 2024 and older Taycans can acquire an adapter immediately by purchasing it from the Porsche online shop or a local dealer for $185, plus applicable sales taxes and shipping charges.
The widespread adoption of Tesla's NACS by major automakers underscores a significant effort to standardize EV charging and enhance the overall electric vehicle ownership experience. This strategic embrace of a rival's infrastructure highlights the industry's focus on overcoming charging infrastructure challenges to accelerate the transition to an all-electric future.
