Ethiopian Mega-Dam Poised to Ignite Regional Development and Energy Future, Diplomats Confirm

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is lauded by diplomats residing in Ethiopia as a significant achievement that promises to foster development, ensure energy security, and enhance the quality of life throughout the region. This perspective was shared during exclusive interviews with ENA, highlighting the dam's pivotal role in Ethiopia's future and regional cooperation.
Brigadier General G M Shariful Islam, the Bangladesh Defense Attaché, described the GERD as a major milestone for Ethiopia. He expressed optimism for the nation to embark on further mega projects under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. According to Islam, the successful completion of the GERD is a testament to the collective effort of the Ethiopian people, demonstrating a remarkable unity among individuals from diverse backgrounds, regions, and beliefs. This shared endeavor not only cultivates a strong sense of national pride but also instills confidence that substantial achievements are attainable through collaboration.
Islam further emphasized the dam's transformative potential in addressing the long-standing challenge of electricity access in the Eastern African region. With a projected generating capacity of approximately 5,200 megawatts of electricity, the GERD is set to dramatically alter this dynamic. He noted that this substantial energy output will fuel industrial development not only within Ethiopia but also in neighboring countries, thereby improving the regional economy as a whole. The energy generated is expected to power households across Ethiopia, drive industrial growth, and enable electricity exports to adjacent nations, significantly enhancing the quality of life and stimulating economic growth across the entire region.
Nigeria's Deputy Ambassador, Maxy Ogbede, echoed these sentiments, underscoring that the GERD aligns perfectly with shared aspirations for increased energy output, benefiting both Ethiopia and the wider Nile region. Ogbede stressed the dam's importance for an improved electricity supply, better infrastructure, and the promotion of commonalities among African communities, reaffirming Nigeria's steadfast support for this monumental achievement. He articulated hope for enhanced electricity supply, improved infrastructure, and a strong promotion of shared interests within African communities, wishing for the dam to continuously produce energy for Africa.
Burundi Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe commended the Ethiopian people for their remarkable accomplishment in realizing the GERD. He highlighted that the project was brought to fruition through the collective contributions of Ethiopians—morally, financially, and through dedicated hard work. Nyamitwe asserted that this success exemplifies Ethiopia's leadership and demonstrates that ambitious goals can be achieved through strong will and unity. He noted that Ethiopians contributed from their own pockets, morally and financially, signifying a great achievement and setting an example that major accomplishments are possible when there is collective will. Ambassador Willy Nyamitwe concluded by stating that the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam stands as a powerful testament to what a nation can achieve when united, fostering both national pride and inspiring regional collaboration for a brighter future.
