Ethiopia's Skyward Vision: Bishoftu International Airport Set to Dominate African Aviation by 2030

Ethiopia is embarking on a monumental infrastructure project with the development of Bishoftu International Airport (BIA), a new greenfield superhub designed to revolutionize Africa's aviation sector. Situated approximately 40 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa, BIA aims to alleviate severe congestion at the existing Addis Ababa Bole International Airport and firmly establish Ethiopia as a global leader in aviation connectivity. Backed by the influential Ethiopian Airlines Group (EAG), this undertaking is recognized as one of the most substantial infrastructure initiatives in Africa to date, promising a new era for air travel across the continent.
The construction of Bishoftu International Airport is planned in meticulously phased stages to ensure continuous responsiveness to the continent's rapidly expanding travel demands. The initial phase alone, projected to require an investment of USD 12.5 billion, is slated for completion by 2030 and will equip the airport to handle an impressive 60 million passengers annually. Upon its ultimate configuration, BIA's ambitious design envisions a colossal capacity to accommodate up to 110 million passengers per year, setting an unprecedented benchmark for scale and aspiration within African aviation infrastructure.
This transformative project is anticipated to serve as a powerful catalyst for regional trade, tourism, and investment across Africa. The immense passenger capacity and state-of-the-art facilities planned for BIA will unlock a multitude of new routes, significantly streamline passenger flows, and robustly support the expansion strategies of both Ethiopian Airlines and other African carriers. For travel professionals and the broader tourism sector, the emergence of BIA signifies unparalleled opportunities, including enhanced connectivity, more efficient transit options, and unprecedented access to global markets.
Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Group CEO of Ethiopian Airlines, articulated the project's significance, stating, “Bishoftu International Airport marks a historic leap in Africa’s aviation journey. With its cutting-edge technology, sustainable design, and unparalleled connectivity, the new airport positions Ethiopia to become the aviation capital of Africa, serving as a major gateway connecting the continent to the world. We urge global financiers to join us in supporting this ambitious project.”
The BIA project is underpinned by a robust and comprehensive structural framework that reflects its immense scale and strategic importance. The African Development Bank (AfDB) has been appointed as the Initial Mandated Lead Arranger, lending considerable credibility and specialized expertise to the complex financing process. Technical and financial advisory services are being meticulously provided by Dar Al-Handasah Consultants (Dar) and KPMG, respectively, while Clyde & Co is diligently overseeing all legal aspects. These strategic partnerships underscore the project’s unwavering commitment to adhering to global best practices, ensuring transparency, and fostering long-term sustainability.
Momentum for the project is steadily accelerating, with several key milestones already achieved or imminent. The Ethiopian Airlines Group has successfully released the Project Information Memorandum and the detailed Financial Model to prospective lenders, marking a critical step towards securing financial closure. Furthermore, the pre-qualification process for Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractors is actively underway, with bid submissions anticipated by mid-December 2025. This rapid progression signals a clear transition of the project from vision to tangible implementation. Industry observers are eagerly anticipating the project’s featured presentation at the upcoming Africa Investment Forum (AIF) Market Days, scheduled to take place in Rabat, Morocco, from November 26-28, 2025, where it is expected to attract significant interest from global development financiers, commercial banks, and institutional investors.
For the African travel sector, Bishoftu International Airport is poised to be a genuine game-changer. The new superhub will not only effectively resolve existing capacity bottlenecks but will also serve as a powerful springboard for sustained tourism growth, enhanced intra-African connectivity, and strengthened worldwide linkages. With a strong emphasis on sustainable design principles and the integration of advanced technology, BIA is strategically positioned to attract a diverse array of airlines, tour operators, and investors who seek reliable infrastructure and forward-thinking partnerships. As African economies continue their diversification and urban populations expand, the demand for efficient, high-capacity air travel solutions is set to increase exponentially. Bishoftu International Airport represents a bold and proactive response to these challenges, promising to connect African destinations more seamlessly than ever before and to open vast new horizons for business, tourism, and cultural exchange. Ethiopia’s visionary approach to Bishoftu International Airport extends beyond merely adding runways and terminals; it is fundamentally about establishing the foundational infrastructure for Africa’s next era of aviation leadership and prosperity.
