An ideal candidate for an inverter is someone with at least 12 hours of public power supply daily or an existing power generator user seeking a quieter alternative, especially for night-time operation. Generators can also be used to charge inverter batteries. For those in areas with less than 12 hours of public power, an inverter only makes sense if supplemented by a generator or a solar power system. Inverters are particularly beneficial for homes and offices experiencing frequent power outages.

They are less optimal for inductive loads, such as machines with motors like refrigerators, freezers, and air conditioners, due to their high starting currents. If planning to power inductive loads, it is imperative to select an inverter with sufficient capacity and the capability to handle these initial power surges. To determine the equivalent VA (Volt-Ampere) rating, divide the total wattage by an assumed power factor, commonly 0.8 (e.g., 320W / 0.8 = 400 VA). To ensure the inverter does not operate at full capacity and to enhance its longevity, it's recommended to 'derate' the calculated VA. This involves multiplying the total VA load by a factor of 2 or 3 (e.g., 400 VA × 2 = 800 VA). Therefore, an inverter with a power rating of 800VA or higher would be suitable.
The choice of battery is paramount, as it is the inverter's energy source. Deep-cycle batteries are specifically optimized for inverter loading characteristics and generally outlast standard car batteries. The most recommended type is the SMF (Sealed, Maintenance Free) deep-cycle inverter battery, which can be safely installed indoors due to its sealed nature, preventing the emission of poisonous fumes. While more expensive, SMF batteries offer superior performance and convenience. Alternatively, tubular batteries, another type of deep-cycle battery, require some maintenance but are more cost-effective. However, they are not completely sealed and should not be installed indoors due to gas emissions. Standard car batteries are generally discouraged due to their shorter lifespan and fume emissions.
Understanding inverter specifications, particularly its input voltage requirement (e.g., X VA/Y V), is crucial for battery compatibility. Since most batteries are 12V, an inverter requiring a 12V input will need a minimum of one 12V battery, while a 24V input inverter will require two 12V batteries connected in series, and a 48V input inverter will need four 12V batteries in series. Battery capacity, measured in Ampere-Hours (Ah), dictates how long a battery can power the load before discharge. A 200 Ah battery is generally recommended, although 100 Ah or 150 Ah can suffice for lighter loads. For extended use time, additional batteries can be connected in parallel, increasing the theoretical energy capacity. For example, two 200 Ah batteries in parallel could theoretically double the use time. When connecting batteries in parallel, the input voltage requirement of the inverter must be maintained across each parallel set.
For enhanced efficiency, consider inverters with solar energy support, known as solar inverters. These devices feature built-in solar charge controllers, allowing connection to solar panels for charging batteries with free solar energy. Solar inverters can also charge batteries via generators or public power supply.
