The epic Skywalker Saga, which seemingly concluded with 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, is set for an unexpected continuation, extending the nine-film narrative to a proposed twelve. Lucasfilm and Disney are actively developing a new trilogy of Star Wars movies, with significant progress being made towards production.
Simon Kinberg, who was first attached to the project in 2024, is slated to pen the new trilogy. Kinberg brings a wealth of experience, having previously contributed to various X-Men films, co-created the animated series Star Wars: Rebels, and served as a creative consultant on The Force Awakens, the first film of the sequel trilogy. While specific plot details remain scarce, the new films are expected to pick up the story threads left by Rise of Skywalker. Daisy Ridley is anticipated to reprise her role as Rey Skywalker, with the potential return of other familiar cohorts yet to be confirmed.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Watts has been tapped to direct the inaugural film of this upcoming trilogy. Watts is a seasoned director known for his blockbuster success, having helmed three critically and commercially successful Spider-Man movies for Sony and Disney. His directorial background also includes the horror feature Clown and the Brad Pitt-George Clooney comedy thriller Wolfs. Furthermore, Watts is not new to the Star Wars universe, having written, produced, and directed the Disney+ series Skeleton Crew, which premiered in 2024.
Beyond the new trilogy, the Star Wars cinematic slate is expanding. February 19, 2027, will mark the return of the original 1977 film, A New Hope, to the big screen for the first time in three decades, presented in an all-new restoration of its original theatrical cut. Later that year, on May 28, 2027, Star Wars: Starfighter, an entirely new film directed by Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling, is scheduled to premiere. Both 2027 releases are planned for standard theaters and super-sized IMAX screens. Additionally, the beloved characters from The Mandalorian, Din Djarin and Grogu, made their big-screen debut on Memorial Day 2026.
