The President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, Ghana (IET-GH), Engr Henry Kwadwo Boateng, has issued a call to action to Ghana’s next generation of engineers.

According to him, future engineers should build a future rooted in ethics, sustainability, and innovation.

Speaking at the official launch of the IET-GH Student Chapter at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) on July 11, 2025, Engr Boateng urged students to view engineering not merely as a technical profession, but as a moral responsibility to protect Ghana’s environment, serve communities, and challenge destructive practices.

“We believe in engineering that protects, not destroys,” he declared.

“And we believe that you, the youth, have the courage to challenge the status quo and engineer a better Ghana.”

Held under the theme “Engineering the Future, Youth, Innovation, and Excellence,” the inauguration ceremony drew participation from academia, industry leaders, and students united by a shared vision of transformative engineering leadership.

The event marked UMaT’s formal entry into the IET-GH student chapter network, a growing initiative aimed at grooming responsible and forward-thinking engineers across the country.

In his keynote address, Engr Boateng highlighted the urgency of the national environmental crisis, citing research from Atiwa East which revealed toxic heavy metals in food crops a consequence of unchecked mining and industrial practices.

“This is not just an environmental issue,” he cautioned.

“It is a direct threat to our survival. And behind this destruction are powerful individuals’ kingpins driven by greed. Sadly, some may be closer to us than we’d like to admit.”

Despite the grim realities, his tone was also one of hope and challenge. He called on students to rise as “agents of change,” to reject unethical shortcuts, and to uphold excellence through innovation guided by conscience.

“Let excellence guide you. Let innovation inspire you. And let your conscience lead the way,” he urged.

Engr Boateng also encouraged collaboration among professional student groups on campus, stressing the value of unity over competition.

“Let healthy collaboration not rivalry be your guide,” he advised.

“Together, we can drive progress that is ethical, inclusive, and impactful.”

The ceremony was attended by a host of distinguished guests and engineering professionals including:

Engr Prof Richard Amorin, Chairman for the occasion and Head of Department (Postgraduate Studies), Vice Dean

Engr. Prof. Mrs. Gladys Quartey, Guest Speaker

Engr. Dr. Ohenewaa Kakra Dankwah, Patron of the UMaT IET-GH Chapter

Engr. Seth Ayim, Executive Director, IET-GH

Engr. John Bentoom, Vice President, IET-GH
