The Deputy Head of the National Food Safety and Reference Laboratory at the Veterinary Services Department, Dr Benjamin Kissi Sasu, has emphasised that farmers and traders moving livestock must possess official movement permits to help prevent the spread of animal diseases.

Dr Sasu stated that the permit system is a critical component of efforts to prevent the spread of animal diseases across regions.

He explained that the movement permit is not merely a formality but a vital disease surveillance tool that allows veterinary authorities to track and control the movement of animals.

This, he noted, helps prevent the spread of contagious diseases that could harm public health and the livestock industry.

In a metrotvonline.com report on July 3, 2025, Dr Sasu stressed that when animals are moved without proper documentation and checks, it becomes difficult to contain outbreaks.

“The permit allows us to know where the animals are coming from and whether they have been inspected and declared healthy,” he explained.

Dr Sasu acknowledged that some farmers and traders still fail to obtain the required permits, often due to ignorance or disregard for the regulations.

This non-compliance, he warned, increases the risk of widespread infections that could cripple the agricultural sector and affect food supply chains.

He urged all stakeholders involved in animal transport—farmers, traders, and drivers—to cooperate with veterinary officers and adhere to the rules.

He also indicated that the government and relevant agencies will step up enforcement to ensure compliance.

Dr Sasu concluded that protecting animal health is a shared responsibility, and strict adherence to movement regulations will help safeguard livelihoods, protect consumers, and preserve the integrity of Ghana’s food systems.
