U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has announced a major new campaign encouraging Americans to adopt wearable health devices like fitness trackers and glucose monitors. Speaking to lawmakers this week, Kennedy described the effort as “one of the biggest” in the Department of Health and Human Services’ history, part of what he’s calling the “Making America Healthy Again” agenda.
According to Reuters, the plan aims to get every American using wearables within four years. These devices—like the Fitbit Charge 6 or Dexcom G7 continuous glucose monitors—track key health indicators such as heart rate, glucose levels, and physical activity. We love the new Apple Watch Series 9!
Kennedy stressed that wearables empower people to “take control over their own health,” letting them see how different foods or habits affect their bodies in real time. The idea is to reduce reliance on costly medications like Ozempic, which can cost over $1,300 a month. “If you can achieve the same thing with an $80 wearable, it’s a lot better for the American people,” Kennedy said.
Though critics question whether this signals changes to Medicare coverage, wearable tech stocks jumped after the announcement—Dexcom shares rose 10%, while Abbott’s were up 3.6%.
Kennedy’s personal emphasis on healthy eating, movement, and body awareness aligns with a shift toward prevention over prescriptions. For sustainability-minded folks, this approach also highlights the link between health and lifestyle—especially diet and plant-based choices.
If you’re not already wearing a health tracker, this might be the time to consider one. For your health, for the planet, and for a more conscious lifestyle—find a wearable that fits you. Every heartbeat counts.
