Emotional Rohit Sharma Reacts As Wankhede Honors Him With Named Stand
May 16 will always hold a special place in Rohit Sharma’s heart. On this day, the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai officially inaugurated a stand named after the Indian cricket legend.
This honor comes during the ongoing IPL 2025 season and adds another feather to Rohit’s illustrious cap. The event was attended by several notable figures from Maharashtra, as well as Rohit’s family and close associates.
Rohit has now joined an elite list of cricketing greats who have stands named after them at Wankhede, including Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, and Vijay Merchant.
The inauguration ceremony saw the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, MCA officials, Mumbai Indians owner Nita Ambani, and Rohit’s wife and parents.
An emotional Rohit Sharma addressed the crowd and expressed his gratitude for the honor. He said:
“This is a surreal and unforgettable moment for me. I never imagined even in my dreams that a stand would be named after me at Wankhede. I’m deeply thankful to my parents, coaches, fans, and everyone who has been part of this journey. What is going to happen today, I have never dreamed of. As a kid growing up, I wanted to play for Mumbai, for India. No one thinks of this… For me to have my name amongst the greats of the game… I cannot express it in words… This is also special as I am still playing. I have retired from two formats, but I am still playing one format.”
Rohit also acknowledged the love of Mumbai fans, saying that the chant “Mumbaicha Raja Rohit Sharma” at Wankhede reflects his deep connection with the city.
Fitting Tribute to Glorious Career
Rohit Sharma has not only excelled in international cricket but has also been a pillar for Mumbai in domestic cricket. As a captain, he has led India to major victories, including the T20 World Cup 2024 and the Champions Trophy 2025.
Having recently retired from Test cricket, Rohit will continue to represent India in the ODI format and is still a major force in the IPL.
