Emmy Music Nominees: Thomas and Julia Newman, Hans Zimmer and More

Published 19 hours ago4 minute read

A father-daughter composing team was nominated, Hans Zimmer could win his first Emmy, and a music supervisor was nominated for three different shows — just some of the surprises among nominations for the 2024-2025 Emmys unveiled Tuesday morning by the Television Academy.

Thomas Newman and his daughter Julia Newman were nominated for their music for Netflix’s miniseries “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” a first in Emmy history for a two-generation, same-family collaboration on a single television score. And in another musical-family story, Oscar and Emmy winner Michael Giacchino’s son Mick Giacchino was nominated for his original music for HBO’s “The Penguin.”

Zimmer, who has two Oscars and four Grammys, has never won an Emmy but could this year with his nomination in the documentary music category for NBC’s “The Americas” (shared with fellow composers Anze Rozman and Kara Talve).

Music supervisor Gabe Hilfer dominated the music supervision category with nods for three different series: HBO’s “The Righteous Gemstones” (with DeVoe Yates), Apple TV+’s “The Studio” and HBO’s “The White Lotus.” Hilfer previously won in 2023 for his work on “The White Lotus.”

Also among multiple nominees, Ariel Marx received two nominations for original music, both in the limited or anthology series, movie or special category, for the “Hotel Reverie” episode of Netflix’s “Black Mirror” and for the FX miniseries “Dying for Sex.” And Cristobal Tapia de Veer, who already has three Emmys for “The White Lotus,” was nominated for two more, for both series score and main title theme music.

Women composers and music supervisors did well this year, with female competitors in five of the seven music categories. Sherri Chung received her first Emmy nomination for Peacock’s “Based on a True Story.”

The other nominees in her category — music composition for a series — include Brandon Roberts for Disney+’s “Andor,” Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson (previous Emmy winners) for Netflix’s “Cobra Kai,” Antonio Sánchez for Apple TV+’s “The Studio” and Theodore Shapiro, again nominated for his music for Apple TV+’s “Severance,” for which he won last year

Competing with the Newmans, Giacchino and Marx in the music composition for a limited or anthology series, movie or special are Daniel Pemberton for another episode of Netflix’s “Black Mirror” (“USS Callister: Into Infinity”) and Kathryn Bostic for Hulu’s “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat.”

In addition to “The Americas,” the documentary music category includes Duncan Thum and David Bertok for the José Andrés episode of Netflix’s “Chef’s Table,” Jacob Shea and Laurentia Editha for BBC America’s “Planet Earth: Asia,” Grammy-winning classical composer Caroline Shaw for PBS’s “Leonardo Da Vinci” and Ilan Eshkeri for HBO Max’s “Super / Man: the Christopher Reeve Story.”

Kendrick Lamar could score his second Emmy award as music director (with Tony Russell) of the “Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show” on Fox. Other nominees for music direction include Rickey Minor (already a three-time winner) for CBS’s “The Kennedy Center Honors,” Michael Bearden for ABC’s “The Oscars” and the music directors of two “SNL 50” specials on NBC: “The Anniversary Special,” Eli Brueggemann, Leon Pendarvis and Lenny Pickett; and “The Homecoming Concert,” James Poyser and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson.

This year’s original song category is particularly star-studded, with Adam Sandler (along with Dan Bulla) nominated for “SNL 50: The Anniversary Special,” Kristen Wiig (along with Sean Douglas and Josh Greenbaum) for the Netflix documentary “Will & Harper,” and EGOT winners Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez for “The Ballad of the Witches” in Disney+’s “Agatha All Along.”

Also nominated in the song category are Christopher Lennertz for Prime Video’s “The Boys” and past Emmy winner Nicholas Britell and showrunner Tony Gilroy for a planetary anthem in a climactic episode of the Disney+ “Star Wars” series “Andor.”

Main title theme music nominees (in addition to de Veer’s “White Lotus” nod) include Netflix’s “Dept. Q,” by past Emmy winners Carlos Rafael Rivera and Scott Frank; HBO Max’s “Dune Prophecy” by Volker Bertelmann; Adult Swim’s “Lazarus,” by Kamasi Washington; Netflix’s “The Residence,” by Mark Mothersbaugh; and Apple TV+’s “Your Friends and Neighbors,” by Dominic Lewis and Hamilton Leithauser.

Competing against Hilfer for the music supervision Emmy are Matt Biffa for HBO Max’s “Hacks”; the team of Evyen Klean, Ian Broucek and Scott Hanau for HBO’s “The Last of Us”; and George Drakoulias for Apple TV+’s “Severance.”

The music winners will be announced during the two-day Creative Arts Awards and Governors Gala Sept. 6 and 7. Final round voting for members will take place between Aug. 18-27.
