in the 1950s, short hair came to represent a shift from rigid beauty standards – as evidenced by her character in Roman Holiday confidently requesting a haircut before embarking on a new adventure. But while it’s liberating and easy to style, the crop is also notoriously difficult to grow out once you’re ready to change things up again.

At a premiere for her new film Eddington, Emma Stone – who unveiled a dramatic crop at the Golden Globes back in January –showcased a brilliant solution. Her growing hair was styled in whimsical waves, including curtain bangs at the front. Hairstylist Mara Roszak evolved Emma’s look with longer curly strands at the front, which effortlessly frame Stone’s face, adding definition and texture.

A trending summer style, softer hybrid pixie cuts have been spotted on celebrities including Iris Law, Carey Mulligan and Tyla. The blended crop is “gamine but ethereal and has lots of soft edges – there’s no harsh line at the back of the neck, instead the ends are almost tufty, giving the cut a feeling of length”, hairstylist Luke Hersheson previously told British Vogue. The result is a mature, grown-out look that features sections of hair that sit around the ears and bangs that graze the forehead, creating a fun “elfin” feel.
